  • Mock-up for the 1640-60 stays done! I posted a short video showing me putting them together, link in my profile for those of you interested in that sort of thing.

Mid 17th century fashion calls for a 'off the shoulder' look but this is VERY off my shoulder, I think I need to raise it a smidge!

Reconstruction of the bedroom, circa 1700, France. Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
⠀
In the reconstruction used the original things which belonged to king Louis XIV – chair, decorated with the monograms of Louis, girandole created by his order, and tapestries that adorn the beds and walls, created at the Royal manufactory.
The tapestries depict stories from Ovid, as well as characters from the fables of Lafontaine. Tapestry heroes are the king and his family.
⠀

Eloise Stannard was an important member of the Norwich School of painting, specialising in still life. She was renowned for highly detailed and exquisitely textured flower and #fruitpieces, such as the present work 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 (1880), which were achieved with the skilful use of glazes.
#EastAnglia shared physical characteristics and trading ties with #Holland and, like so many Norwich artists, Stannard was influenced by the #17thCentury #DutchGoldenAge masters. Here, her combination of a rich variety of fruit with luxurious pieces of silver reflects her admiration for the still lifes of #JanDavidszdeHeem and #JanvanHuysum. Stannard insisted on painting outside in direct sunlight which gave her paintings an increased luminosity. When she was asked how she remained occupied during the winter, she explained that she painted in the gold objects onto the half-finished canvases.
Stannard was a member of the Society of Lady Artists and her work is represented in the collections of #Norfolk Museums, #NorwichCastle Museum and Art Gallery and Greenway, #NationalTrust.
This work also features in our #upcomingexhibition 𝗙𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 £𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 (opens 16 Jan)

  • In my hand luggage on Easyjet yesterday was a recent purchase, a portrait of William III, Prince of Orange and King of England, shown here propped up against a wall, still awaiting a permanent position, with another view in the second image. The painting is from the studio of Gottfried Kneller, or Sir Godfrey, as he became in England, who amazingly trained with both Rembrandt in Amsterdam and Bernini in Rome, before becoming court painter to William and Mary, his studio producing endless versions of the monarchs' likenesses. Although the painting itself is perfectly nice, it is not particularly special, as many versions of it exist, and we wouldn't have bought it if it were not contained in the original spectacular carved and gilt trophy frame, which makes it a truly exceptional object, highly desirable for frame fetishists such as ourselves. The shape and construction of the frame would seem to suggest it may originally have served as an elaborate crest placed on a larger frame, possibly a depiction of one of William's many military conquests, but that's pure speculation. If you suddenly experience slight feelings of déjà vu, that might be entirely possible, as this piece has featured before on this medium and is in fact our very first Instagram-purchase, courtesy of @roypreciousfineart, to whom many thanks! #oldmasters #oldmasterpaintings #williamiii #williamandmary #17thcentury #trophyframe #frame #portrait #artcollecting #artcollectors

  • What is going on here? Perhaps a 1660s style Voorloper or two?
One thing about the dutchies I never really thought about before is the length, often 20cm longer than the English or German counterpart.

  • We are ecstatic to present you with this new text, specifically a collection of images in a French work from 1688, the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King himself, Le Roi!

Entitled "Costumes Francais du 17e Siecle, 1688". Though published in the late 17th century, the text is highly fashionable for the era and much of the clothing appears to be that found in Britain, within the earlier portion of the 18th century.
Though entirely in French, this book is primarily a set of images of the clothing, accessories and beauty styling of the era, inclusive of masquerade clothing. This is quite a wonderful text for historians, costumers and reenactors.

⠀
