Finally rounding out The National saga, here we have the band’s fifth album in its deluxe form. While ‘Alligator’ and ‘Boxer’ garnered some positive buzz for the band, it was ‘High Violet’ that earned them commercial success. The compositions, the songwriting, the emotion, and everything that was great about the previous albums are culminated onto this very album. ‘High Violet’ displays a much more mature sound in both its music and lyrics. Having been through hell and high water as individual people and a collective band, The National was able to channel everything that worked rights in their careers and make a magnificent work of art. Songs like “Sorrow,” “Everybody’s Ghost,” and “Afraid of Everyone” are just a handful of highlights off this album (although realistically speaking, the whole track list is phenomenal). With the addition of some besides and live recordings, the expanded edition was something absolutely worth owning. As of right now I can Police say that I own the band’s entire studio album catalog. The next step will be to pick up any miscellaneous EPs or singles that I might find in the wild. But until then I will be enjoying everything of theirs that I already own.
