A view from above the Eagle's nest near Obersalzburg. My attempt to climb to the point was prevented by large amounts of steeply sloped snow blocking the upper approach to the prominence. I did make it to the top on the anniversary of the day that my predecessor's had 70 years before. I had to take a bus on the main road but, I got there, and the drive afforded wonderful views of the mountains and valley and even the nearby pristine Konigsee (which had good ice cream) though the town on the lake's edge was a bit touristy, It was beautiful. The Eagle's Nest is unique and has an interesting history. A few years before, I never imagined I would walk on the very spot that my mentor told me about in his recounting of those days at the end of WWII. It's a small engineering marvel perched on the rock outcropping How they had climbed up there. If you find yourself in Berchtesgaden, it's worth the time for the history and the views. #travelblog#journeyjournal#travelersnotebook#traveler#germany#eaglesnest#traveladdict#travelblogger#travelculture#thetraveltag#worldtraveler#tourist#worldtravelpics#exploremore#kehlsteinhaus#obersalzberg#alps#bavaria#berchtesgaden

#WalkWithLocals Y’all inspired me to finally start posting some vacation pics. Love the DC skyline, but flying over the alps on @swiss.air was one of the most magical things I’ve experiences.
Really really wish I had downloaded @lordoftherings_official soundtrack for it...

Had lunch at my grandparents' house today when my grandpa told me "Hang on, I gotta get something". Little did I know he'd come back with the shirt of his father's uniform from WWII and say "Try this on". 80-ish years old and it fit like a glove. It honeslty made me a little emotional. I never met the man but I learned about him my entire life and he's one of my personal heroes. Norman P. Buettner was a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne and also served as a Glider with the 82nd. He jumped on D-Day behind enemy lines, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and glided into the Netherlands. He was also one of the first Americans to take Hitler's home in the Alps, the Berghof in Berchtesgaden, and served as a German translator- all before settling down in little Pecatonica, IL and having my grandpa. In summary, dude was a badass. The shirt no longer bears his insignia, patches, or badges (taken off for display), but the stitching is still visible and so cool to touch. I bet he'd be a little miffed that I didn't shave (left my razor in Chicago) or tuck the shirt properly in this photo, but I hope he'd think this is as cool as I do. Never stop asking your family questions! My grandpa would have never thought to share this with me if he hadn't known I'd find it so cool. Learn about your family and you learn about yourself- PSA over
The older I get the more I realize how beautiful this world and this life are.
My own mortality has begun to hit me hard the closer to 25 I get, and I’m not ready.
Living a life with no regrets.
Being old and being thankful for EVERY memory.
Loving and laughing for 60+ more years...
There is a difference between being a person you love and settling for who you are. Don’t settle. Don’t give up and live in a place of mediocre happiness.
Mediocre happiness is terrifying and I’m not willing to settle.
