❤ #loveyourself

  • I don’t want to jinx anything but I think I’m definitely going to be out of my three-star run with The Poppy War 😍 It seems like ages since I read a book that invoked the same feelings as when I was 14 or so and devouring The Hunger Games and the like! Who doesn’t love reading books where there’s some seriously intense training or studying, a mysterious mentor, rivalries and alliances forming... gah I just love it! I read a lot of slower, character-based books these days but that’s not to say I don’t enjoy a gritty, action-packed read now and again!
.
PS I’m obsessed with tea pouring shots now, what ya gonna do? 🤷‍♀️
.
PPS Yesterday I was super motivated to take loads of photos, which is a good job since I sliced my finger this morning and had to go to A&E to get it bandaged up 🙈 It’s not bad but it wouldn’t stop bleeding! So no photo-taking today 🙊

  • 💌 Happy Sunday, Bookworms!!

Qotd: What’s a book that you’ve always wanted, but STILL don’t have a copy of??
-
I completely dropped the ball on today’s Shelfie/Sock Sunday photo, so I’m instead using the photo that I was supposed to use for my weekly book haul post on my blog, (which I forgot to do as well). But... there’s a shelf in the background so that counts as a shelfie, right?? 🙈 Pictured above are some of the books I have aquired over the past 2 weeks, and quite a few of them are ones that I have wanted copies of for the LONGEST, and now finally have thanks to my wonderful husband. (They were his Valentine gifts to me! 🥰) I have wanted a copy of *Nevernight* by Jay Kristoff for a while now, and I’m beyond thrilled to finally have a copy! (I’m super excited for the rest of these books as well!) 🥰 Are there any books that you’ve always wanted but still don’t have??

  • Following on from my last post, I wanted to give you some more information about stem cell/bone marrow donation.
If you sign up to be a stem cell donor you most likely won’t have to donate from the bone marrow itself. In 90% of cases stem cells are collected through the donor’s bloodstream in a process called peripheral blood stem cell collection. This is a similar experience to giving blood, but it takes longer (up to 8 hours). So that means that most donors won’t have to undergo surgery or stay overnight in hospital.
For the other 10% of donations (including mine), the stem cells are collected from the donor’s bone marrow. It involves a small surgical procedure using a needle to collect bone marrow from the donor’s pelvis under general anaesthetic. The procedure lasts about 20-40 minutes and the recovery time is about a week. I had to donate the maximum amount of bone marrow allowed and I’m in minimal discomfort. There seems to be a common misconception that donating bone marrow is extremely painful, but the only pain I’ve experienced has been headaches due to fatigue and a sore throat from the breathing tube. Nothing that a few paracetamol can’t sort out! I’d describe the recovery process as feeling like a prolonged hangover; not ideal, but nothing major in the scheme of things, especially when you could be saving a life. If fear of pain is something that’s holding you back from signing up, I can’t stress enough that the incisions do not hurt afterwards, they just feel a little uncomfortable. They look like two small pin pricks in the skin and take about a week to heal. Your bone marrow is fully replenished within a few weeks.
DKMS pay for you to have the procedure at a private hospital and you stay in a private room. They also cover travel expenses for you and a companion and a hotel room so that your companion can stay close by. Everything is taken care of to make things as stress free as possible. Ideally donors are healthy people aged between 16-30, so if you fit that description I’d urge you to consider signing up.
There’s a link in my profile if you’re interested and my DMs are open if you have any questions. ♥

  • Everything.
Everything we love gets colored and affected by our mood. Every sensation is heightened or lowered ... Everything that affects us negatively during the day is like an extra layer of clothing keeping us from feeling the world around us ... and if we engage it we have a chance at shedding it before we start taking this emotional jewelry home with us.

The world we engage affects us. Heck, we can wake up from an anxiety dream or night mare and be affected so much that we don't enjoy our breakfast. But what else can happen? Getting cut off on the road, running late or getting negative comments at work, being frustrated by failed attempts at fulfilling tasks? All happen pretty regularly in an engaged human life.
But what is the problem then? The problem then is that if these are not engaged and processed, I'm not going to be able to enjoy my family. They are what I live for, and I'm going to miss them, or worse, mistreat them because of what I went through during the day.

This means that if we do not regulate how we are being affected, we do not get the positive affects we are working for (Happy, healthy family). The flower of our life will not smell as good if we do not recognize that we ran through mud, and clean it off our nose before sniffing.

We need to engage our reality all day, as often as possible, to keep our ability to receive joy at a high enough level to honor those in our lives that we love.

  • I went and sat in the spa the other day and smashed through a good portion of “All the Missing Girls” by Megan Miranda, then ended up finishing it later on in the bath. 🛁 🧖🏼‍♀️ (someone give this girl a job ASAP before I become a permanent lady of leisure!) 💆🏼‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I liked this book to a certain extent. It’s certainly a different one, as it tells the story day by day, backwards. I did find myself pretty confused and had to flip back a couple of pages to remember what was happening and how certain things fit in with the story, which isn’t my favourite way of reading.. Though I will say it was quite a clever way of doing it. It had enough suspense and excitement to keep me reading and was definitely a quick one for me. I will say the main character was a bit of a let down, she was kind of unlikeable but also a bit forgettable, nothing really stood out to me about her which is a shame. 😑
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was ⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me, only because the layout wasn’t as easy to get through and I found myself forgetting things and a bit confused here and there. Also the ending was a bit of a meh for me. I’m totally curious about her other books though as I think this one definitely had potential, just a few personal dislikes on my end. 🤷🏼‍♀️

....Oh my god, that cover though, right?!? 🎡🙌🏼

  • Buckling in for my short essay (8-10 pg) for my Faulkner class. I believe I’m up to at least 10 books out of the library and at least 4 articles. I’ve got 8 days to draft and edit it in the midst of dealing with another round of sick. 🤦‍♀️Feeling the crunch. On the bright side, I’m learning quite a bit about Southern women and culture. Looking forward to this one. Btw, I am so glad I bought Scrivner! It is so much easier to all my notes and research and essays in one place. #protip #gradstudent #essay #amwriting #amreading #williamfaulkner #scrivener #whatssleep #mamasgothomework
