  • One address, two glorious mansions (and a lil bit of thievery). In 1883, railroad magnate Henry H. Cook hired architect W. Wheeler Smith to create this incredibly extravagant mansion at 1 East 78th Street. The white, blue and red granite exterior must’ve been a sight to behold! After Cook’s death in 1905, the property was sold to Tobacco King James Duke (Doris Duke’s father), who tore it down to build his own mansion. The contractor that was paid to demolish the structure called it “the best-built house ever torn down in New York City.” Cook’s art collection went to the #metmuseum (thank god) and the other architectural elements within the home were sold for cheap. Horace Trumbauer, who was hired to design the new mansion, was not widely accepted by New York architects, who disapproved of his "stealing" designs from historic properties. Just look at his “inspiration“ for the Duke Mansion - the Hotel Lobottiere in Bordeaux, France (pic 4) -which was built in 1773. I mean ... it looks exactly the same as the Duke Mansion! It’s incredibly beautiful nonetheless and a sight to behold. Completed in 1912, the 40,000 square foot gem is now home to the NYU Institute of Fine Arts, the graduate school of art history. Check them out as I believe they have public exhibitions @nyuifa ❤️. 📷 @urbanarchiveny app and #nyhs:
