Susan's Mother, Lucy Read, was known in her younger days for her love of dancing and music. Lucy was raised as a Baptist by Daniel and Susannah Read from Cheshire, Massachusetts, just up the road in Adams, Massachusetts from the house where Susan was born. When Lucy married Daniel Anthony, a member of the Adams Quaker community, she had to give up her "earthly ways." Lucy set aside her dancing and music - though there are rumors that she would still sing lullabies to Susan and her siblings.
Susan described her mother's life as "a supreme ordeal of hardship," raising her own children in addition to caring for the mill girls who lived with the Anthony family, losing one daughter at the age of two, and enduring bankruptcy and constant relocation with her family. Susan looked to her mother as one of the strongest role models in life, teaching Susan from a young age about #equality#loyalty#perseverance and #justice
