  • I sat at my work desk today and teared up. I had little time to breathe and no copies prepared for tomorrow. Nothing was graded. I had a ton of messages to respond to and obligations to people and places. It was a snowstorm and I had no shovel, no window cleaning thing, and I knew I had to find parking downtown. I have fewer of these moments these days - moments where I wish that just for once, things could be easier. I remembered that I’m blessed to have these problems - with a good job and a car and places to be. I remembered my teachers, remembered the value of suffering, and looked for the lesson. I recruited a kid to help me clean off my car and drove away to my spiritual home. It’s been 12 years. I’ll buy a shovel. “Even before achieving full self-awareness, it’s possible to refine how we process life events. People immersed in their conditioning and people who have learned to see beyond body and mind to the soul confront the same problems and dilemmas. The difference is how they respond. Those immersed in their conditioning think, “Here is my bad luck again, coming to make my life miserable.” But wisdom cultures around the world teach us to think, “Here is my hard luck again, coming to help me cleanse my misconceptions and to grow.” The difficulties of this world won’t disappear when we reach full self-awareness. Rather, devotion will equip us with a deeper level of perception: We will see the hand of the Supreme providing us opportunities for growth even in the most desperate of circumstances, and in the course of time, when our spiritual connection is depended, we will be truly free.” - Radhanath Swami, The Journey Within

  • dear yogis, according to many great sages and wise scriptures God is everywhere and God is in everything. If this is so, why then should we go to temples, shrines, churches and other pilgrimage sites ? Instead of traveling to these places surely we can praise and pray to God anywhere and save our time and money ?

Of course there is nothing wrong with this reasoning. You can praise and pray to God from outer place instead of going to a temple if you need to. However there are several specific reasons as to why going to a spiritual center and praying there can have benefits.

Let's take an easily understandable example :
Imagine that you are driving in your car and on a trip that should last about one hour.
You are in the driving seat and your friend is seated next to you. After 20 minutes you discover that one of the tyres has been punctured and is losing air. Of course driving like this will be very difficult and dangerous so you explain to your friend everything about the problem.
Your friend does not look worried at all but instead gives you two suggestions :
Firstly that you should not worry about the leak because air is everywhere surrounding us so if you just leave the tube open for while the tyre will be fine and will refill with air automatically.
His other idea is that if the first is not successful then we can always blow new air into the tube.
Dear yogis, which idea do you think is the best ?. Obviously once the puncture is fixed the tyre tube will need new air introduced into it and to do this it will need a lot of pressure to force the air in there. Of course there is always a lot of air present in the surrounding atmosphere but to be useful for our car we need to use pressure.

Definitely in this situation you will need to go to a car repair shop where the tube can be repaired and there is a machine with pressure to introduce new air easily. (This is also the reason most cars need to carry a spare tyre at all times !) Dear yogis, similarly God is everywhere and in everything just like the air in the atmosphere.

  • Instead of heading out to any evening programs I decided to stay home and start a new painting of Sri Nityananda Prabhu (based on a painting I’ve always admired, but now creating in my own style and with revised details based on sastric descriptions of Sri Nitai). Acrylic on 24x36 inch canvas. Will probably take me a long while to finish, as I’ll just work on it here-and-there in my free-time. In order to save time I didn’t sketch it out free-hand, but instead projected it on the canvas and traced out the main elements and proportions. Of course afterwards I noticed there was significant distortion from the lens so I had to go back over the lines and fix proportion issues (see second photo). It’s all a work in progress. This is why I don’t paint much: because it’s so time consuming, but the process is always a relaxing, beneficial meditation and the end result is always satisfying to see manifest. #painting #painter #art #artist #artwork #acrylicpaint #nityananda #jainitai #nitai #gaudiya #vaishnava #harekrishna #westbengal #ekachakra #bhakti #bhaktiyoga
