Southern right whale: Eubalaena
•Distribution: The southern right whales are spread throughout the southern part of the Southern Hemisphere.
•Lifespan: Life span is not clear although whales seem to reach over 100 years old.
•Size: An adult female is 15 m (49 ft)and can weigh up to 47 tonnes, with the larger records of 17.5–18 m (57–59 ft) in length and 80 tonnes or up to 90 tonnes in weight.
•Diet: Southern right whales feed mainly on copepods, krill, mysids and plankton, among other tiny crustaceans. They are baleen whales - they don't have any teeth, and feed by filtering food through 220-260 baleen plates which hang from each side of their upper jaws.
•Conservation status: Least concern.
•Dangerous: Not to humans.
•Did you know?: It is almost indistinguishable from the closely related North Atlantic and the North Pacific Right Whales, displaying only minor skull differences.
Please comment what marine animals you would like to see on my page in the future :)

  • A new study highlights the value of fully protected marine reserves. ⠀
⠀
When networks of large marine protected areas are established, they can better ensure the connectivity of populations by protecting migratory paths and key habitats for migratory species. ⠀
⠀
Currently, less than 3 percent of the ocean is strongly protected. This is far short of the global consensus that we need to protect at least 30 percent of the ocean to help conserve biodiversity effectively, allow plant and animal species to recover, and safeguard traditional cultures closely linked to the sea. ⠀
⠀
The research was conducted on a network of MPAs in French Polynesia, where @pewenvironment and @BertarelliFoundation have been working to support the creation of coastal Rāhui areas throughout the islands.⠀
