Plastic Ocean - Part II
Each American generates more than 1,600lbs of garbage every year. That's more trash per person than any other nation on Earth. Much of it comes from plastic products. Our love affair with plastic has turned us into a throwaway society, with over 40% of all plastics being single-use. If you want to pick one type of plastic to go after, it’s single-use plastics.
Examples of single-use plastics are product packaging, plastic bags, water bottles, beverage containers, utensils, and straws. In addition, many take-out containers aren’t accepted by recycling facilities, even if they have a recyclable label on them. San Francisco has banned fluorinated take-out containers (along with plastic straws and utensils). Unfortunately, not many cities have followed suit.
Plastics bags are especially difficult to recycle. It costs so much more to process the bags than can be earned from selling them, so most of them end up getting sent to the dump. While a few flimsy bags don't seem like much, they add up: Americans consume an estimated 100 BILLION of them every year. These lightweight bags are easily blown away and make their way into the water streams, eventually ending up in the ocean, where they’re confused for jellyfish and eaten by innocent sea turtles. Once ingested, the plastic blocks the digestive system of these animals, and they eventually starve to death.
This adjustable brass and turquoise arm band is designed with the 3-sided recycling symbol represented in the 3 sides of the triangles, and the continuous cycle of plastic represented by the continuous circle of the arm band. The stones bear a striking resemblance to our oceans. It’s part of my Plastic Ocean Collection, which will be released on Feb 1st at 6pm PST. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to organizations that work to keep plastics out of our oceans.

Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!
Can we just stop and talk about how to come from a place of love even when we have been hurt?
So... I kind of have figured out that when I’ve been wronged in life, I tend to try SO hard to come from a place of understanding and compassion that without even realize it, it was almost like I was excusing them and not realizing how much I actually internalized the hurt feelings. I would justify another’s actions and excuse my own toward myself. Seeing it from a wider perspective it’s almost baffling that I didn’t put myself first. I think I didn’t want to ever feel like I was being egotistical or you know just not giving a damn about anything outside myself. Obviously now I see how ridiculous that was as well have to put ourselves first in some capacity.
So how do we find a balance of being compassionate toward others in the face of adversity without allowing our own selves to be completely torn down?
For me, I’ve figured out that I love to serve people and come from a place of love no matter what, however, now I kindly put up boundaries. Even in doing so I always try to be cognizant of other feelings, time and really just their being. It’s not always easy, but I really am striving to be the change, spread that light amongst the darkness and spread love.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you tend to do what YOU need no matter what? Or are you more like me and do what is needed (even if it puts me out) for others no matter what? How do you balance it?
