  • I’d like to introduce you to Paw Eh Bu. Paw Eh Bu is from Myanmar. She is Karen – an ethnic group with a long history in Burma, one now characterized by continuous armed conflict and displacement. Like many Karen people, Paw Eh Bu spent much of her childhood in Myanmar on the move to avoid violence; finally settling at a refugee camp in Thailand for over 5 years. ❤️
Paw Eh Bu has now been in Buffalo for 5 years and joined the Stitch Buffalo community 3 months ago. I have seen the empowerment Paw Eh Bu has felt from receiving her first paycheck. She is driven to create beautifully stitched pieces, as well as experiment with materials to create unique new items for Stitch. ❤️
Your financial support provides the materials, space, teaching, and venues for Paw Eh Bu and dozens of other women with similar stories to find a sense of community and belonging in our wonderful City of Neighbors. To join our family click the link in our bio.

  • I got rid of my mattress of 10+ years and cut up the old bedsheets for fabric, used some in this quilt here. There’s also some old T-shirts, a pair of shorts that got stained with blood, an old tablecloth, and a sweater I spilled soup on. That’s Larry the dog stealing the spotlight in the third pic.

This is second in a series of quilts with layouts pulled from contemporary alternative comics. This arrangement is from one of C.F.’s pages, one of my favorites. Comics and quilts may seem unrelated, but they both are systematically excluded from the art world writ large. They both also rely heavily on the structure of the grid, an idea commonly addressed by fine artists.

When it comes to drawing, I always hated tedious projects. I work fast and loose, finishing paper works within a couple of hours. Even when I made figurative work, I never spent much time on details.
So, I’m a bit shocked to find I enjoy every part of making quilts- a process that requires immense planning, accuracy, and time. I spend a lot of time planning the layout, calculating measurements, cutting the fabric as perfectly as I can, ironing out wrinkles and pressing seams, making sure it all lines up. The rhythm and quiet, reflective nature of it all is something I respond to.
