  • What is a serum? Serums are vehicles to deliver active ingredients effectively to your skin. Usually applied after you wash your face and before you moisturize. Moisturizing can actually help seal in the good stuff, help with any greasiness that you might feel after using an oil-based serum, ane help enhance the serums ability to penetrate the skin with the good stuff.

Serums can come in many forms, from oil free gels,  water on oil or oil in water emulsions, or anhydrous formulations (i.e. facial oils). Did you know that emulsions can help enhance the penetration of active ingredients? That's why we always like to use either emulsion type serums or follow up with an emulsion type product (i.e. your daily moisturizer). There are lots of things to consider when formulating a serum. The big ones though - will the product be stable and will the active ingredients be bioavailable? I see this so commonly as a problem in many products on the market. For example - there's really no point of using ascorbic acid if you're not going to keep the pH low, and use good packaging choices to prevent oxidization (i.e. not a transparent package and one that limits air in, like an airless pump). This specific ingredient is only really able to effectively penetrate your skin at a pH under 4. To add, it's also a very unstable ingredient, so not formulating with care will result in a product that reaches the consumer with no active vitamin C in it. Ever get a vitamin C product that arrives to you in a yellow to tan color? That's a pretty good indicator that the vitamin C has started or has all oxidized. Ps, this is where vitamin C derivatives can help make your life easier as a formulator. Did you know that natural oils and essential oils are very prone to oxidization (i.e. going rancid, which isn't good news for your skin generally)? If you opt to incorporate one of these ingredients in a product, adding an antioxidant, such as vitamin E/tocopherol, is key to preventing this from happening, ensuring your product is more stable, and extending the shelf life of the product (note, antioxidants are NOT preservatives, but that's a whole other can of worms). 📸By @thejennydoesstuff

  • Meet Delta! 💕 she’s my friend’s new pup back home and she’s a border collie x german shepherd mix 🐶
——
There are so many advantages when it comes to owning a mut. Many dog breeds are predisposed to diseases genetically. For example, german shepherds often get Von Willebrand’s disease which is an inherited disease where they lack a certain factor to make them effectively form a blood clot. However, having been bred with another breed, this greatly dilutes the chances of the dog from getting it because the puppies may inherit the good genes from the other parent. In addition, their genes will be well mixed up and less likely to mutate into a disease. This goes the same for many brachycephalic breeds (short faces breeds). They often have trouble breathing due to their shortened airways. If a pug were to be bred with a dog with a longer nose such as a daschund, their puppies will most likely end having a nose longer than the pug’s but shorter than the daschund’s, decreasing the chances of them having breathing problems 🐶🐶 Of course many breeds are designed to do a specific job but its important to know that its not necessarily always pure breed dogs > mixed breed dogs! 👍🏼

  • 38 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Fell asleep at 1, wide awake at 4. Which is a long stretch of sleep these days 🙄 At 7:30 I gave up trying to get back to sleep, woke Bella up for breakfast and moved to the couch to watch bar rescue. I guess we’ll have an afternoon nap today 😛 I can only post so many pictures of my puffy, pregnant self lounging around at home, so here’s more bowhead whale bone from a couple weeks ago when I still got out 😛 #homestretch
