Eu creio no Divino Espírito Santo santificador.

  • I’m not a religious human, but here’s a thought - we should put our faith in wonders created by God, instead of manmade objects created in God’s name.

Thankful for the natural blessings in this world. Thankful for the mountains, trees, streams, sky and all of the interesting and different animals and creatures. And don’t get me started on the delicious food that comes from the dirt.

I’m not religious, but I try be a good human. I try to respect, love, and protect the world, it’s creatures, and my fellow humans to the best of my abilities. That’s all there is, right? You don’t have to be religious. But, please - be a good human. 🙏🏾

Part 1
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This once great 12th century (built 1129-1199) collegiate church in the south of Cantabria has long been off the beaten path. It is well away from the deeply cut “rut” between the main east-west pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Medieval pilgrims would not visit it if they were travelling the main coastal routes that edges the Bay of Biscay, nor if they were coming from the east of Spain along the northern edge of the great Spanish Meseta plain. (Though it is just off the Camino Real that linked Castile to Santander going directly north from Palencia - in that sense its famous - some would say infamous, sculptural program begs comparison with the earlier salacious sculptures of Santillana del Mar (11th century) and Frómista (1066).)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cervatos has one of greatest collections of explicitly erotic sculpture on its exterior as on any religious institution in Spain. Moreover, the depictions are so lurid that they have often been blithely compared to Khajuraho (10th-11th centuries) in India. Included at Cervatos are several examples of male and female exhibitionism, where men and women shamelessly display their genitals, including one audacious female placed for maximum effect on a window of the apse, where it is the first image visitors would encounter when approaching the church from the village below. In addition there are several characters who masturbate publicly, many others who engage in sexual intercourse or sex play in various positions: autofellatists, sodomites, voyeurs. There are also examples of homosexual intercourse, and even the suggestion of sex between men and animals. A metope of the southern wall portrays animal coitus. There are also phantastic animals, monsters, various types of contortionists, jongleurs, montebanks, and many men carrying or thirstily drinking from wine casks.
