  • Currently on view at Frieze Los Angeles is Valeska Soares’ "Doubleface (Cobalt Green)” (2017), a vintage oil painting that the artist has modified to suggest the allure and mystery triggered by covered objects. As part of a series by the same name, Soares sources recovered portraits, affixes a second canvas on the back which she paints in monochrome. She then cuts and folds over a piece of the assembled painting to reveal the portion of the original portrait that she finds most evocative, thus disrupting a small portion of the monochromatic plane. In "Doubleface (Cobalt Green)," Soares reveals the eyes of the subject, capturing the intimate gaze between the unknown model and portrait artist.
