  • Indignant grey squirrel – Anthropomorphism, or the act of applying human emotions to animals, has been a buzzword in wildlife photography for many years now. It’s a concept that I support wholeheartedly as I believe that anything that encourages people to become more empathetic toward, or to treat our animal cousins with more compassion and respect, can only be a good thing. I think that it’s particularly salient in these times as we learn more and more of the sentience of other birds and mammals, how they experience the same complex emotions that we do, how they feel pain in exactly the same way and how they possess the same neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Such overwhelming evidence, I hope, will begin a fundamental shift in how we begin to view these other valuable living beings, living creatures that I fervently believe have exactly the same right to live in peace that we do, free from the abject terror, pain and violence on whom we currently and needlessly inflict. Returning to the image I very much doubt however that this squirrel was actually being indignant, even if that is the appearance that he is unknowingly creating, his arms folded in a very human like fashion. Nevertheless, this momentary body position does at least give the image an extra dimension and a little bit of humour. Compositionally I might have preferred that the squirrel was looking into, and not out of the frame but with a large horse chestnut tree at left, itself partially in shadow, I preferred instead the autumnal hues of reds and yellows. @discovery @earthpix @bbcearth
