These are the first jewels I made, around 1996. I came across the opals by chance—I ran into them at a little antique jewelry store when an opal dealer happened to be visiting (he is still my opal dealer!), fell in love and bought them (and they were expensive) and took them home and decided I should try to make something myself. I bought a plumber's torch and a little silver and a tiny bit of gold, and I must have even changed the shape of the stones a little, because I ended up with those extra pieces I used for sort of bows on the top. Someone later asked me if they were meant to be the Big Apple, and I immediately took the bows off. They are still my favorite earrings, and I wear them often. And the backs are enameled—the idea was to echo the flashes of the opal. I love enameling.
