The 2018 Oscar nominations are in and as usual it was a mixed bag of results. The big winner of the day has to be Netflix as their road to legitimate studio was capped off by Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma came away with 10 nominations. Picture, Director, both Lead and Supporting Actress noms all help the beautifully crafted film the early front runner and gives the streaming giant its first taste at Oscar glory. Matching its 10 noms was Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, whose quirky period setting and three acting nominations for its trio of fantastic performances for previous winners Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, and odds on favorite Olivia Colman in the Best Actress category, could make it the dark horse favorite to snag multiple statues next month. Marvel also made their bid for comic book legitimacy as Black Panther became the first movie of the genre to score a Best Picture nom. It was a big day for African American filmmakers as Spike Lee picked up his first ever nod in the Directing category, and his BlacKkKlansman totaling 6 noms. Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk was surprisingly left out of the Picture race but still has a front runner in Regina King and good chance with Jenkins’ adapted screenplay. First Man, Oscar darling Damien Chazelle’s biopic of Neil Armstrong, picked up four technical noms but was left out of all the major categories, a surprise for such a strong candidate going into awards season, especially for star Claire Foy who seemed a lock for Best Actress a month ago. Other snubs include the Academy totally ignoring horror film Hereditary, and first time director Bradley Cooper, who guided A Star is Born to 8 nominations but was overlooked in the Best Director race. It feels like a year of the Academy setting a new precedent with its honoring many films of color but with the MeToo movement still firmly in place failed to honor any female filmmakers. But as usual they can nominate so many and it’s another mixed bag again this year, but there are a few standouts that will make for an interesting finale to the 2018 awards season.
