  • Freediving is about silence, silence that comes from within. Not my words, I believe Mr. Mayol said so. But I couldn't agree more. I get a lot of questions concerning mental preparation, focus, meditation, yoga, etc... Yes, mental focus and being able to relax is a big part of freediving. Probably more than other sports, the mental side is the deciding factor. But, also in other sports I've been a part of as an athlete or a coach, when you get to a high level, it comes down to how you handle things in yourself, more then how physically ready you are. When at top level, all athletes are fit and ready. There are no shortcuts to learning how to mentally prepare. And its not straightforward like - do some yoga or use meditation. Getting into yoga classes doesn't really do anything much for your diving but makes you better at yoga. What is meditation? 10 people will give you 10 different explanations. Its a foggy term.  On my courses I teach people techniques from sport psychology, therapeutic procedures, autogenic training, deep relaxation, guided "meditation", sensoring games, visualization, trigger training, flow training, focusing techniques, etc and a lot of personal experience mixed together. This way I give people the opportunity to figure out their own pattern that works. Even after figuring what works, you need to train this like any other skill, perfect it, change it, make it better. What I wanted to say is, we are all unique, and there is no magic, you need to test, make errors, try again and become skilled. Same with other sports. The coach gives you tools, and you need to work them then. And there is no single tool to do it all, as there is no perfect tool. .
