  • Porte d’Enfer, or the gates of hell is a spectacular view of the wild coastline along the northern corner of Grand Terre, Guadeloupe. Hiking along the point past the lagoon I came across this vantage point & peered down. “Do you know the story of this cave” a man shouted out to me in French as he & his wife passed. They sat on a rock just near the edge & proceeded to share the history. Legend is that Madame Coco made a deal with the devil to be more successful than another witch on the island. Ok, so this is where it gets interesting. Partly because it’s a story of nefarious characters & partly because my French isn’t the greatest so I was translating as he was recounting the tale. Apparently, madam coco didn’t keep her end of the bargain, so the devil brought her here and pushed her to the sea. Watching the tumultuous waters swirl below, I can image the cave as a salty, jagged cauldron. I’d otherwise probably stopped here & continued on walking - you gotta love when locals just stop and help enrich a place for you to learn more, enjoy in the moment & imprint a lasting memory.
