Color and Light, Grand Canyon || Photographing daylight lightning requires he right equipment, a fair amount of preparation, a little skill, and lots of luck. All these elements converged for this August sunrise on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. The rainbow was a welcome bonus. #garyhartworkshops

Looking for more weekend adventures !

The canyon can be an unforgiving place. But the peaceful beauty of fresh snowfall and the exhilaration of standing on that point 3,000 feet above the river is one I will seek out again. [12-31-18]
Day 4 on the Tapeats-Deer Creek loop from 2005. We weren't able to get a coveted Deer Creek backcountry site, so we passed through the Deer Creek area after camping on the beach at 135-mile rapids. A couple easy miles in the morning brought us to the Deer Creek narrows, pictured here. We had a few hours to explore before heading to our camp on the Esplenade.
This weekend will be productive and spent indoors 🙄.
But it’s ok because I backpacked the Grand Canyon last weekend, a thing I’ve wanted to do forever.
Happy Friyay all. If you’re getting outside, enjoy! If you have to work, I am in solidarity with you ✊🏽
This guy...my valentine.
I am so bummed we are apart on this day but everyday we are together is Valentine's Day. I am so lucky I get to love and be loved by this handsome and awesome guy. Love him to pieces!
Workshop's closed for today, and tomorrow I'll be spending Valentine's Day with my valentine, @bentarrowstudio . Sadly we'll not be spending it walking in the Grand Canyon, but fortunately our local beach is just as beautiful.
#WisdomWednesday Grand Canyon Edition! "Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread."
Did you know that author and conservationist, Edward Abbey, used to work at the Grand Canyon? He served as a ranger at Lee's Ferry for a time and as a fire lookout on the North Rim! Check out our stories for more lesser known facts about the Grand Canyon!

👆🏼Can't think of anything to do for Valentine's Day? How about a trip to the Grand Canyon? 🚶🏻♀️💕🚶🏼♂️
Grand Canyon National Park, in Arizona, is home to much of the immense Grand Canyon, with its layered bands of red rock revealing millions of years of geological history. Viewpoints include Mather Point, Yavapai Observation Station and architect Mary Colter’s Lookout Studio and her Desert View Watchtower. Lipan Point, with wide views of the canyon and Colorado River, is a popular, especially at sunrise and sunset. Photo credit 📸@alexandra_nicole_
Last February, I headed to the Hualapai rez to backpack to Havasupai. We arrived at sunset and the colors were fiery from the canyon rim, so I reached for my camera to make an image.
To my horror, that “NO MEMORY CARD” message appeared on my screen. I had accidentally left my memory card tucked safely in my laptop, 300 miles away back at home.
I had wanted to visit Havasupai for years. Finding out I couldn’t make images on my DSLR was incredibly disappointing - a photographer’s worst nightmare.
I had my cellphone and resignedly decided it would do. And, it did do, capturing some of my favorite, most beautiful moments of 2018.
Ironically, last weekend, I thought I wouldn’t be taking any trips in the next few weeks, so I sent my camera in for repairs. Not a day later, I was invited to the Grand Canyon to backpack, my first real excursion within the National Park.
This time in the Canyon, however, the absence of my camera hardly phased me.
You see, the beauty of the Canyon is so grand that you don’t need a fancy camera and glass to capture it. Hell, you don’t even need an image to help you remember the awe you feel as you witness each distinct rocky layer, contrasting with snow highlights and green plants, the colors of the landscape changing with the differing hues of the sky as the sun rises and sets beyond the canyon walls ✨
