  • This image is from the first unsuccessful launch attempt of the Soviet Moon rocket, the N1. The rocket was launched 4 times between 1969 and 1972. With a payload capacity to LEO of 95,000 kg (209,000 lb), it had a smaller payload capacity than the USA's Saturn V had (140,000 kg (310,000 lb). However, the N1 had some pieces of hardware that were just awesome. The one that fascinates me more is the regeneratively cooled staged combustion cycle bipropellant (RP-1 and LOX) rocket engine which was used in the 1st stage, the NK-33. These engines were highly sophisticated by that time because they used oxygen rich preburners to drive the turbopumps. This kind of burners are pretty unusual since the hot oxygen-rich exhaust tends to attack metal what this means the Soviets were highly advanced in material science! And also these engines had an impressive thrust-to-weight ratio of 136.7, only surpassed by the RD-253 (156.1) and the Merlin 1D (180.1). Image credit to Twitter's account @RussianSpaceWeb

  • IC 5067 in the Pelican Nebula
.
.
The prominent ridge of emission featured in this sharp, colorful skyscape is cataloged as IC 5067. Part of a larger emission nebula with a distinctive shape, popularly called The Pelican Nebula, the ridge spans about 10 light-years following the curve of the cosmic pelican's head and neck. This false-color view also translates the pervasive glow of narrow emission lines from atoms in the nebula to a color palette made popular in Hubble Space Telescope images of star forming regions. Fantastic, dark shapes inhabiting the 1/2 degree wide field are clouds of cool gas and dust sculpted by the winds and radiation from hot, massive stars. Close-ups of some of the sculpted clouds show clear signs of newly forming stars. The Pelican Nebula, itself cataloged as IC 5070, is about 2,000 light-years away. To find it, look northeast of bright star Deneb in the high flying constellation Cygnus.
