  • Today 74 years ago on February 23, 1945 U.S. Marines raised the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi. Three days into the Battle of Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines had captured Mount Suribachi, the mountain overlooking the island. The first American flag was raised and all the Marines and Sailors on the island cheered at the sight of it. It would be replaced by a much bigger flag so that everyone could see it better. It was then that War Photographer Joe Rosenthal and Marine Cameraman Bill Genaust captured the iconic moment of the five Marines and one Navy Corpsman raising the second American flag. Joe Rosenthal's iconic photo earned him a Pulitzer Prize and the photo was in newspapers, magazines, War Bonds, and stamps. Bill Genaust's film of the flag raising was also iconic but not as iconic as Rosenthal's photo. Bill Genaust was killed later during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The Battle of Iwo Jima would continue until March 26, 1945. Marine Commander Lieutenant General Holland "Howln' Mad" Smith said "The flag raising on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years". Not only did the photo of the flag raising become one of the most iconic photographs of World War 2 but became one of the most iconic photographs of the entire 20th century. #WorldWar2 #history #1945 #IwoJima #MarinceCorps #USNavy #rasingtheflagofiwojima #MtSuribachi #MarineCorpshistory #iconicphoto #GreatestGeneration

  • In 1945, as people waited in Times Square for Truman to declare victory over Japan, a young sailor suddenly decided to kiss the nurse standing closest to him. Maybe he was celebrating the end of the war, maybe he was happy that his chances of being killed in the Pacific just disappeared. Either way, the iconic photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt of the impromptu kiss is about uninhibited joy. Add 74 years and all that’s happened in the world since, it still remains an image of joy. The power of this story is about the timeless spell of that spontaneous kiss. .
.
The magic is gone. Collective experience of joy lives only in memory. And god forbid a strange man Frenches an equally strange woman on the street in full view today. But how will we immortalise our current era? With photos of a Syrian child washed up on a beach? Or can we, by common agreement, bring love, joy and gratitude back to the zeitgeist? .
.
I poached pears in red wine and spices for Valentine’s Day, thinking about the sailor and the nurse. As I plated it up on Slow Pottery’s beautiful, handcrafted Camilla plate, I was reminded of all the times I’ve been kissed. How good it felt. How full of joy I was every time. .
.
George Mendonsa, the sailor in the photo, died a couple of days ago. .
.
@slowpottery it brought me so much happiness to work with you and your handmade pieces of art. Thank you. 📷: @trg.x .

  • We all know this famous picture: The Kiss
The ecstatic sailor shown kissing a woman in New York's Times Square celebrating the end of the Second World War died this Sunday february 17th. He name was George Mendonsa, he died at the age of 95. Mendonsa fell and had a seizure at the assisted living facility in Middletown, where he lived with his wife of 70 years, his daughter, Sharon Molleur.
Mendonsa was shown kissing Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant in a nurse's uniform, on August 14, 1945, known as VJ-Day, the day Japan surrendered to the Allies. People spilled into the New York City streets to celebrate the news.
Mendonsa planted a kiss on Friedman, whom he had never met.
An iconic photo of the kiss by Alfred Eisenstaedt was first published in Life magazine and is called "VJ-Day in Times Square," but is known to most as "The Kiss."
It wasn’t a romantic event, Friedman said in a 2005 interview with the Veterans History Project that it wasn't her choice to be kissed.
Friedman died 3years ago at the age of 92.
They both were 20 at the time of the kiss.
