  • Tucked between Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace is Hagia Irene, dating back almost 1500 years. The first time I went here -- in February -- I was alone. No family, no other tourists. The stillness consumed me. It's rare that you feel a presence in a place, and it could have been that I was PMSing or something, but I revisited this basilica in November and had the same experience. I had been told in February that the interior was being renovated, but in the nine months between visits, it seemed little to no progress had been made. It's a shame, because you really have to crane your neck to see the ceiling detail beyond the netting draped across the length of the basilica, and the entire upstairs portion is closed off to visitors. But this is Turkey; everywhere you go, elements of its ancient past surround you: city walls, aqueducts, amphitheatres... I can't imagine what a monumental task it would be to keep all of this perfectly restored. February 2018 / Hagia Irene, Istanbul, Turkey 🇹🇷
