  • Herbal Medicine for Kids: I love using herbs with my little one. Here are a few of my favorites:

- Calendula: my favorite for topical issues. It's wonderful for eczema and minor skin irritations. I also used a liquid form of Calendua (a succus) when Matteo had trust as a child. I like @californiababy and @moonvalleyorganics for prepared calendula creams.
.
- Herbal Honey: honey is an excellent cough reliever, and more effective than OTC meds. It is safe to use in all kids over the age of 1. If you want to learn how to make a herbal honey, there's a link in my profile with instructions on how to do it yourself.

- Elderberry: the best kid friendly immune support by far. Elderberry syrup can be homemade or bought. Research suggests it can reduce the duration and symptoms of a cold. I like to use it daily during cold/flu season. Our current favorite is @gaiaherbs Elderberry.

- Chamomile & Passionflower: these are some of my favorite herbs to help an overtired child wind down. Both herbs can be given as tea or in glycerite (liquid) form. For a glycerite, we use @wisewomanherbals Kalmerite. When we have a tea party with Matteo, it's with @tradmedicinals lavender chamomile tea.

- Lavender: this herb has so many applications: topical as a cream, inhaled as an essential oil, as a tea, or in a glycerite form. It's well known for it's ability to promote sleep and works really well for kids. You can diffuse the oil at bedtime as a nice way to help everyone wind down.

- Thyme & Echinacea: these herbs have an affinity for the respiratory track, and as a glycerite, they can be given in place of OTC cough/cold meds. We use Planetary Herbals Old Indian Syrup for Kids because it contains both of these herbs and tastes great.

  • Acne is is a symptom... a warning from our ingenious body that things on the inside are not right... .

There is usually a complex interplay of factors underlying acne: .
👉inflammation (eg from diet - #dairy being the biggest culprit, swipe right to see some studies showing the link between dairy and acne... you may have other food intolerances/sensitivities too, common ones being eggs, corn, seafood, nuts and soy) .
.
👉stress which causes #inflammation and👇
.
.
👉hormonal imbalance eg insulin resistance leading to too much insulin, which then stimulates higher androgen production (this is why excess sugar is thought to cause acne), too much androgens, or too much going down the 5-a-reductase pathway)
.
.
👉toxin/heavy metal which can cause ☝️AND 👇
.
.
👉gut issues (dysbiosis/leaky gut) which is very common in our modern world due to our lifestyle and toxicities we are in inundated with... .
.
👉liver/kidney congestion - this goes hand in hand with gut health.. blood labs may show up normal, but it takes a lot for liver and kidney labs to become abnormal... our liver/kidneys are often working overtime and overwhelmed with toxins/inflammation/poor diet - and it can show up on our skin (and this applies to lots of other skin conditions too like #psoriasis .

👉genetics - some people have a genetic predisposition to acne but this is always the last on my list of things to work through with clients because there are so many things we can work on before we blame our genes. .

"...You do Home Ec, and you learn how to cook for your man, or for a prison, or for a hospital. That’s what dieticians did. Then somewhere along the line, so I was really frustrated, because I had read this book and then I had gotten into herbal medicine in more detail. You start learning what you eat affects your health, all that kind of obvious stuff, but it wasn’t so obvious to my professors who were just into mainstream pathology. Then I heard about this guy named Jeffrey Bland. That was decades ago. One of my friends in medical school went to a conference and Jeff Bland spoke. He said, “You have got to hear this guy, because he is speaking to the science behind nutrition.” Up until that point, we’d heard, “There is no science behind nutrition. It’s just as beneficial to eat a bag of potato chips as it is an apple. It’s got the same nutrients.” I heard that." [LINK IN BIO].

Apple peels appear to upregulate the tumor suppressor gene maspin, and have strong antiproliferative effects on breast and prostate cancer cell growth in vitro.   • Sedona is gorgeous. Driving into the red rocks, I immediately felt very grounded. It didn't surprise me that being surrounded by rocks would make me feel grounded. The root chakra represents our foundation and feeling of being grounded. It is located near the tailbone and if this chakra is out of balance you might feel jittery or anxious. Feeling safe makes me feel grounded, being in nature and being with my family. What makes you feel grounded?
