  • This week, I’m doing a High Fidelity-Style ‘Top 5 List’ of my favorite things to bake. Today’s fave: preserves.✨

Ok, so right off the bat - jellies, jams, and marmalades aren’t baked goods, I know. But the first time I made my own strawberry jam, it rocked my world - and it deserves a spot on this list. I had made a simple strawberry jam and canned it, storing the jars in a cabinet for later. When each jar was opened, they tasted like the very best, fresh strawberries...the way they are for only a few weeks of the year. I could remember the day I picked the fruit - and juice ran down my chin and fingers as I ate a solid quarter of what went into my basket. I could taste that moment even when there was snow on the ground months later. I felt like a magician for capturing it - and yet it was so easy. I was in love, and still make batches of preserves year round, whenever I get the chance. And for those who’d argue it isn’t baking - my homemade preserves always find their way into sweets eventually. I sandwich them between cookies, or swirl them into pound cake, or layer them into a tart. Then again, I love it most how I’m eating it this morning, simply slathered on buttered toast. 🍞

But rather than say more, I want to share a favorite Mary Oliver poem, The Orchard, and wish her a far-away ‘thank you’ for all the beauty she put out into the world. ❤️

I have dreamed
of accomplishment.
I have fed
ambition.
I have traded
nights of sleep
for a length of work.
Lo, and I have discovered
how soft bloom
turns to green fruit
which turns to sweet fruit.
Lo, and I have discovered
all winds blow cold
at last,
and the leaves,
so pretty, so many,
vanish,
in the great, black
packet of time,
in the great, black
packet of ambition,
and the ripeness
of the apple
is its downfall.
