  • When a nervous mother hippo decided to return her five-day-old calf back to the pond, a tragedy unfolded on the banks of the St Lucia Estuary in Kwazulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park. What started out as curious behaviour in the pond turned violent as this young male (pictured) snatched the baby. Sadly, it was no match for the male. The calf died two hours later after being attacked a second time 📸 by @staceyfarrellphotography

Day 12 - 14: St. lucia
On the 12th day we left early for Port Elizabeth Airport for our flight to Durban. We delivered our rental car at the airport and got another one at Durban airport for our second part of the trip. We drove straight to St. lucia (2,5 hours) and arrived early in the evening. The next day we took a boat trip to spot some hippo’s and crocodiles. It’s a realyl relaxed trip in South Africa's very first World Heritage Site. Home to 800 Hippo's and approx. 1000 Nile Crocodiles. Our guide was really funny and had lots of cool facts about the surroundings and the animals.
On the second day we took a tour to see some more of the regular life of the local people of st. Lucia. We visited a traditional South African village and a local primary school. It was nice but at the same time very confronting to see. The kids seemed to be really enjoying the class and it’s good to see they were getting learned english as well. We were asked to give a donation so the school could take care of the kids who couldn’t afford lunches or school uniforms. Trips like these make you realise how privileged we sometimes are and how happy we should be with the opportunities we get to make most of our lives.
