On Valentine’s Day, 13 same-sex couples in Japan filed a historic lawsuit against the government, demanding the right to get married. Six couples walked to the Tokyo District Court to file their cases. They were joined by three couples in Osaka, one couple in Nagoya, and three couples in Sapporo. Japan’s constitution currently states that marriage shall only be with “the mutual consent of both sexes,” and this has commonly been understood as not permitting gay marriage. The couples are arguing that the government is violating their constitutional right to equality by banning same-sex marriage. Japan is viewed as a very traditional country. About half of the 13 couples who joined the lawsuit remain anonymous because many have not come out and fear being attacked and discriminated against if they do. Lawyers for the couples, however, argue that the text of the constitution was meant to prevent forced marriages and that there is nothing that explicitly prohibits gay marriage. (📷: AP)

I made this account a while back and then just...forgot about it 😅 I guess I had a good reason, though, because I was working hard to get my bachelor's degree in linguistics!
Anyway, I'm a biromantic asexual who likes to read, and I'm trying to contribute to the online presence of a-specs. Please don't expect me to post super regularly, though 🙈
