~~~ Canterbury ~~~
________________________________________________________One of the most photogenic spots in Canterbury is definitely the King’s Bridge overlooking the river Stour. This has built in 1734 over a former medieval bridge.
From this view point you can see the famous “Old Weaver House”, probably one of the most photographed buildings in the city. This is a historic building that was used to host Flemish and Huguenot weavers escaping from religious persecution during the 16-17th centuries and settled in Canterbury for business purposes.
An interesting additional fact is that at the rear of the pub (visible in this picture at the height of the boat), there’s a surviving medieval ducking stool used to punish women who “talked too much“ and suspected witches.
If you are unfamiliar with the term, a ducking/cucking stool is a “chair” that was used as common punishment (mostly) for women. Accused women were usually seated and tied in the chair and left outside for public humiliation. For the most severe punishments (e.g. witchcraft) women were tied to the chair and dunked underwater for several minutes to check their “powers”. If these did not drown, the accusations of witchcraft was confirmed otherwise, their name was cleared.
The Middle Ages was definitely not a great time to be a woman!
🇮🇹In questi giorni mi sento a caccia di primavera. Sarà anche merito di Raphaelle Giordano, che con "Oggi è il giorno giusto per cambiare la tua vita" ha nutrito la mia fame di libertà ed emozioni. Basta sfogliare questo libro e, in un attimo, ci si ritrova a viaggiare assieme a Meredith, che gira il mondo con un taccuino su cui annotare i propri pensieri. Da viaggiatrice e divoratrice di storie che scaldano il cuore, non potevo che innamorarmi della forza di rinascita che brucia tra le pagine del nuovo successo di Raphaelle Giordano. E poi grazie a lei sono tornata nella mia amata Londra, dove la primavera si nasconde nei vicoli e ti sorprende quando meno te lo aspetti!
🇬🇧In these days I'm longing for spring and freedom, so I decided to read something that could feed my hunger. As a traveler and a devourer of heartwarming stories, I could only fall in love with the strength of rebirth that I found in the latest Raphaelle Giordano's novel. I wish that you all could read this book, but unfortunately it hasn't been translated in English yet.
But I love how powerful a book could be. Reading this one made me feel like I was walking through the streets of my beloved London town, where spring actually hides everywhere! As a matter of fact, I shoot this picture in London in October and it was freezing, but still... What are your plans for the weekend?
How have I still not visited this amazing country #switzerland 🇨🇭 These kinds of photos make me wanna go there so bad!
