  • Are we losing the art of map reading? We saw that Bradford Parkinson, who worked on GPS from the 1970s, is concerned that people are too reliant on GPS and would struggle if it stopped working. We’re keen to embrace technology and have our own apps and GPS, but we strongly advocate map reading skills too. We host National Map Reading Week and have a huge amount of material online at os.uk/nmrw to get people started in navigating safely. 📷 @riversidescouts ・・・
Last night the Cubs learnt all about maps and the things you can find on them! They even found Akela’s mum’s house!

  • How to read contour lines on topographic maps.
.
A contour line (also isoline, isopleth, or isarithm) of a function of two variables is a curve along which the function has a constant value, so that the curve joins points of equal value. It is a cross-section of the three-dimensional graph of the function f(x, y) parallel to the x, y plane. In cartography, a contour line (often just called a "contour") joins points of equal elevation (height) above a given level, such as mean sea level.
.
A contour map is a map illustrated with contour lines, for example a topographic map, which thus shows valleys and hills, and the steepness or gentleness of slopes. The contour interval of a contour map is the difference in elevation between successive contour lines.

  • Today was great and I know so much more now than I did waking up this morning.
.
It was great to have a refresh on some of the many things @a.woodsman has taught me about navigation over the years and I have stupidly forgotten due to lack of practice.
.
Dougie at @mammutmountainschooluk was great and very patient when things just would not stick in my brain. I asked dumb questions, made mistakes, and slipped on my ass, but he kept going and, the result, this girl THINKS she knows where she's going now 🤓
.
I guess we will find out tomorrow when I pull on those boots (that I can't shut up about) and pull on this hat (that I may aswell sleep in), and get back in those mountains 😬
.
Thanks a million @samsykesltd for sorting today

  • Yesterday was day 1 of navigation training with the Gold group of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award from the University of Hull.
They did well, so today we’re stepping up the skills a level... I studied for my first degree at Hull but although I’d done a lot of outdoor activities in the army cadets and scouts (including my DofE award) it went on the back burner while I studied Electronic Engineering. It was at the University of Hertfordshire during my second degree that I got back into climbing and mountaineering.

How old were you when you climbed your first mountain / got into a kayak / topped out your first crag etc?

  • A day out yesterday working for @pureoutdoor in the Peak District teaching two Satmap users how to use their new devices. What I love about this beginners bespoke course which I have designed for @pureoutdoor is that it gives me an opportunity to raise awareness of the pros & cons of digital technology online mapping, route planning & finally the actual practical use of a GPS. I’m very clear about the importance of using a GPS as a tool to compliment traditional navigational skills rather than a standalone option.

  • lunch time at table rock

  • When you haven't been up to much but you need to post a pic, so you trawl through the archives!

This is Jade @wild.mountain.instruction on #Liathach back in January. Already looking forwards to getting back up there. Next trip will probably to spend a few, days walking Glencoe for @trailmagazine route cards. Can't wait!

  • I’m all set to deliver a weekend of navigation training for the DofE students from University of Hull. With a couple of hours free time in Ambleside until they arrive I figured I should fuel up properly for the day ahead and where better than at The Copper Pot.
Enjoy your sunny Saturday everybody!
