Newfoundlands are gentle, yet powerful working dogs first bred to work alongside ocean fishermen to haul in large, heavy nets. Formidable long distance swimmers, they are also used for ocean rescue....one legend even tells of a Newf who rescued an overboard Napoleon Bonaparte.
Perhaps this legendary prowess created a powerful sleep gene...a DNA that instinctively tells their brains to rest up for the next heroic act. I am just kidding of course, but I do know that beyond loyal companionship and the unending, ubiquitous display of happy dispositions, the need for sleep is very high on a Newf’s agenda.
This gal here is not hauling nets, she does not cart or draft, nor is she rescuing world leaders from angry oceans. Her only mission is companionship to her humans. But she does possess the “sleep gene” of her working dog line....that is for sure. And with snoring to wake the dead! Extra large floppy ears work as a perfect sleep mask to ensure deep and restful slumber .
