  • ‘Humbling women seems to me a chief pastime of poets. As if there can be no story unless we crawl and weep.’
•
After seeing Circe absolutely everywhere online for months, I’m excited to finally have gotten a copy during the holidays.
•
I’m always one for a good retelling (prime example being Jean Rhys’s retelling of Jane Eyre in Wide Sargasso Sea) so I’m interested to see what Madeline Miller brings to the story of Circe: the sorceress who perhaps most famously seduces and takes hold of Odysseus during his journey home in The Odyssey.
•
If the above quote is any indication, I assume there’s a bit of a feminist bent to the novel as often appears in contemporary retellings. They allow the exploration of a story from an angle other than that of privilege (white, colonial, patriarchal, etc.) found historically in literature.
•
Have you read Circe? Did it live up to all the hype?

  • TV Guide made a list of ‘The Best Books to Read To Prepare For 2019 TV,’ and ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ is on it. (It’s always better to read the book first, right?) 📚

  • I fiiinally ordered enough inserts for all my bookish pillowcases. I saw the idea on a few accounts, including @starlightbooktales, to display the pillowcases on top of bookshelves. What ideas have you borrowed from bookstagram?
.
.
QOTD 2: How hours a week do you spend taking pics for bookstagram? I would say 2-6 hours over 3 days depending on how much book mail I received that week. I’m trying to lessen my photo sessions because due to the algorithm, I see no point posting twice a day anymore.

  • Siiiigh. Here’s the thing: I always check out WAY more library books than I can read in one month, but I never learn my lesson. Going to the library is such a relaxing and fun thing for me, especially considering I can pick out as many books as I want FO FREE!! 🙌🏻
.
.
Are you a library lover like me? Do you go overboard when you go and grab way too many books at a time?? 😂

“Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today.” 🔥
-
With social media, it’s so easy to get caught up & feel like we’re behind. We see celebrities & influencers showing the best part of their lives & we get insecure or envious. Yet, the only person we should be comparing ourselves to is the person we were yesterday & the person we know we can be. 💯
-
Let’s dive into 12 Rules for Life 🗣
-
Rule 1️⃣ “Stand up straight with your shoulders back.” Your body language speaks before you do. Show confidence in yourself & you’ll be respected.
-
Rule 2️⃣ “Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping.” Take care of yourself the way you would someone you love.
-
Rule 3️⃣ “Make friends with people who want the best for you.” When you’re surrounded by the best, you become your best self.
-
Rule 4️⃣ “Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.”
-
Rule 5️⃣ “Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.”
-
Rule 6️⃣ “Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.” Before blaming others for your situation, look at what you could’ve done to prevent it or how you can learn from it.
-
Rule 7️⃣ “Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient.”
-
Rule 8️⃣ “Tell the truth - or, at least, don’t lie.” Tell the truth, share your truth & live your truth.
-
Rule 9️⃣ “Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t.” There’s always something to learn from someone. Even your enemies.
-
Rule 1️⃣0️⃣ “Be precise in your speech.” Learn to clearly express your thoughts. Every word counts.
-
Rule 1️⃣1️⃣ “Do not bother children when they are skate-boarding.” Let kids push the boundaries of what’s “dangerous” every once in a while. This leads to mental strenghth.
-
Rule 1️⃣2️⃣ “Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street.“ Enjoy the little things in life.
-
Which rule is your favorite? 🙇🏾‍♂️

  • El libro 📚 “Out of my mind” de Sharon M. Draper me ha impactado de una manera muy postiva
.

  • A WORLD ERASED transcends the normal books written about the Holocaust; Noah Lederman's grandparents were survivors, and it is through their memories that he writes about the Holocaust.
What I found incredibly fascinating was the tension between generations about consciously avoiding memories versus talking about them to keep them alive. His grandparents suffered and lost so much to the Holocaust that it's not surprising they were reluctant to talk about those years. Not only did it deeply affect them, but their biases, fears, and anxieties were passed down to their children. Noah, however, wanted to know about his grandparents' experiences, especially after his Poppy passed. He gently probed his grandmother for stories, aware that she didn't want to talk about that time, but also aware that these experiences are too important to only live in one person's memory.

This book, more than others, made me think about how valuable personal histories are and how they must be passed down from one generation to the next lest they be forgotten and lost forever.

The Similars by Rebecca Hanover (which I'm #currentlyreading )
.
.
"When six clones join Emmeline’s prestigious boarding school, she must confront the heartbreak of seeing her dead best friend’s face each day in class in this exhilarating and riveting debut by Rebecca Hanover.
.
Junior year just got a lot more cutthroat.
This fall, six new students are joining the junior class at the elite Darkwood Academy. But they aren’t your regular over-achieving teens. They’re clones. And they’re joining the class alongside their originals.

The Similars are all anyone can talk about: Who are these clones? What are the odds that all of them would be Darkwood students? Her best friend, Oliver, died over the summer and it’s all she can do to get through each day without him.

Then she comes face-to-heartbreaking-face with Levi–Oliver’s exact DNA copy and one of the Similars.
.
Emma wants nothing to do with the Similars, except she keeps getting pulled deeper into their clique. She can’t escape the dark truths about the clones or her prestigious school. No one can be trusted…not even the boy she is falling for with Oliver’s face."

  • ‘Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions, For your mother and my mother were friends. I know the innkeeper in this part of the universe. Get some rest tonight, come to my verse again tomorrow. We’ll go speak to the Friend together.’
•
Starting my wknd off drinking coffee and reading Hafiz poems is probably the best thing I could imagine, and since it’s what I’m doing right now I consider myself very lucky.
•
I’ve posted about Hafiz before but I probably will a million more times because his poetry means so much to me. I discovered him by chance when someone mentioned the above quote on a podcast I was listening to and it’s one of those random happenings that felt meant to be.
•
An ancient poet, Hafiz holds a central place in Persian literature. To me, his language holds a rare mysticism and beauty. It’s very accessible but behind his simple words is a depth that explores questions of God, the universe and existence.
•
I’m not a religious person but I am spiritual, and I think the way Hafiz speaks of the Beloved and God captures best how I choose to see the spiritual element of the universe. There’s a playfulness in his vision that I enjoy and it gives his work a lightness as it explores complicated subject matter.
