Our adorable 1963 Busy Bee neon sign came to us from from the 100-year old family owned Busy Bee Hardware in Santa Monica. After the business closed due to rise in rent prices, the Bee flew over and found a new home at the Museum of Neon Art. Although neon signs were being replaced by cheaper alternatives in the 1960s, neon was the only medium that would allow both illumination and an exciting animated display. With only four tubes on either side of the sign, the Bee continues to buzz for visitors as a part of “Kinetic Energy: Art That Won’t Sit Still!,” through March 31, 2019. 🐝
Hurry over to see this historic Santa Monica sign before it flies away to hibernate at the MONA warehouse!

Breezed through town for the first time in almost a decade, and even though there’s some genuinely cool new stuff, I only took photos of my favorite old downtown signs and storefronts like it was my first visit to Bakersfield 🤷🏻♀️

It was physically impossible for me to walk past the flashy neon sign and not take a picture! .
