Pray For the Wicked Tour 2019, Prudential Center (Newark, NJ)
We're pleased to introduce Rutgers Global Affairs PhD student Rosalia Gambino as the fifth and final Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of Emergent Threats in the 21st Century.
1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DGA?
Spring 2019 will be my second semester in DGA’s PhD program.
2. WHAT ARE YOUR GENERAL RESEARCH INTERESTS?
My research interests revolve around issues of human rights and human security. These informed my initial interest in genocide studies and are also at the core of my increasing focus on global health.
3. WHAT DOES YOUR DISSERTATION RESEARCH COVER?
I am currently studying the regulatory policies that govern human experimentation as this work has moved overseas to countries such as India, Bangladesh, and China. My focus is on the role of the state, particularly the United States, in regulating the research, manufacture and marketing of new drugs and how it works to ensure the health of the population.
4. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTRIBUTE TO DGA AND YOUR RESEARCH FIELD AS AN ET21 FELLOW? WHICH FACULTY MEMBER WILL YOU BE WORKING WITH?
As an ET21 Fellow, I will be working with Professor Alexander Hinton to improve my research skills as I attempt to explain how the offshoring of clinical trials affects the health security of those who receive medicines in the United States and how governing bodies work to ensure that security. My research will add a new focus on health to the interdisciplinary nature of DGA. I will be working on a paper to be submitted for publication during this process.
5. WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER ASPIRATIONS AFTER YOU GRADUATE?
After I graduate, I hope to continue researching human security and global health while teaching at a university.
6. ANY OTHER COMMENTS?
I would like to thank Alison Howell for inspiring me to continue this research, Gabriella Kütting, Natalie Jesionka, and Sonam Tashi for believing in this work, and Alexander Hinton for all of his guidance thus far and moving forward.
