You might know of the Takayama morning market, one of the biggest and best morning markets in Japan, but no trip there would be complete without a stroll through the nearby old town.
The old town of Takayama in Gifu prefecture is a place where you can step back in time and into an Edo style neighbourhood of beautiful wooden latticed houses. One of the most well-preserved old streets in Japan, the rows of wooden buildings give you a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy merchants of that time. Many of these buildings are still home to shops, restaurants and sake breweries, some dating back for centuries!
Take a trip to the Takayama old town and you’ll see why it was designated as a Nationally-recognised Important Historical Building Preservation Area. Walk the old streets and admire the craftsmanship, traditional goods and local specialties that surround you here!
