Oscar Wilde - Lady Windermere’s Fan. “There are moments when one has to choose between living one's own life, fully, entirely, completely-or dragging out some false, shallow, degrading existence that the world in its hypocrisy demands.”
"Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or into a hellish creature." CSL, Mere Christianity.
The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
These snippets of thought (among others) are my “word” for the year. In habits of misunderstood theology or sheer laziness, I unknowingly resigned myself to a pro-victim lie that concurred that life will simply happen to me and that the bad qualities, habits and perspectives are just “who I am”.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a romantic and a bit of mystic so I believe in God’s plan, I believe in destiny, and I believe in being uniquely created for a purpose. But I also believe in uniquely creating as taking responsibility in my purpose; an act of worship. And part of that creating lies is in the little choices that make up who I’ll become, who I’ll serve, and how easily I am able to create joy.
I wish I could have just one “word” for the year. But God knows me and knows my lack of interest in being succinct (see: all other wordy captions or talk to me for five minutes. Haha jk, it’d be like 45 minutes...)
So this concept is my “word” for the year. I’ll be doing less of finding myself and more of inventing myself by getting to know my creator and hopefully, give the world a little bit more of what it needs.

My father is my second favorite dub poet #misslou is the first. I grew up hearing daddy dub around the house, he entertained us with drama and dub poetry in the one room dwelling we occupied, me, Gibby, Rashiem, Mommy and Daddy, no water from the pipe no electricity. Daddy taught us how to tease and how to take tease as him ride the Rambo to Kingston College gate occasionally so I could get a plate some days I would look out and wait in vain state. Growing up my father never gave me vanity he never had it to give but what he gave as he recited those poems around the yard was enough to inspire a child to live. My father is yet to receive wealth, mass appeal or stardom, he is a simple man who prizes his freedom. Simple man but no simpleton for the four consecutive national awards I won, this former head boy penned them one by one. I respect this mans work and to show my respect I added five of his pieces to this publication. I livicate this book to daddy, I will use what I have learnt to build and inspire community. You can find this book on #amazonprintondemand@kingstonbookshop or DM me. Big up #firstname.lastname@example.org

Non-linear storytelling isn’t easy but Joe Edgerton’s adaption of Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir ‘Boy Erased’ makes it appear as though it is.
Lucas Hedges appears to be carving out a good niche for himself after ‘Manchester By The Sea’, Lady Bird’, ‘Three Billboards...’ and now ‘Boy Erased’. I’ll certainly be checking out Ben Is Back and Mid90s.
Garrard Conley’s story is a painful one, to have gone through what he did at a young age, but the film is very well crafted. I’m surprised it hasn’t been nominated for more awards. Danny Bensi’s and Saunder Jurriaans’ music are alone worth the experience.

So late for my Very special Valentines Day post. Happy Valentines Day Solange @celinebeeck !! 💕🙆🏽♀️🙆🏻♀️What seems a decade ago (it was), another life ago (it was too) that we started writing plays and “What do girls talk about?” came to life. Roxane and Solange, two friends & roommates, stuck in their apartment on Valentine’s night -pre social media frenzy. The play resonated as women, girls, men, boys, families, friends laughed their hearts out with us in Paris, Nice, Festival d Avignon, Brussels, Hong Kong and many middle of nowhere little theaters all over France. We wrote to create roles for ourselves, to express ourselves and to actually enjoy the process as much as delivering and there and then we had the time of our lives. Also, my hair. Partners in life for life @celinebeeck & @lilidaoud. Big up to @geg_dreamcatcher & the Fabio. #theater#stagelife#actresses#producers#writers#playwright#frenchactress#valentines#femaleproducer#pinkladies#whatdogirlstalkabout
On this day in Black History (1929) Writer Wallace Thurman’s play Harlem opens in NYC. It is the first successful play by an African American playwright. He also wrote essays, worked as an editor, and was a publisher of short-lived newspapers and literary journals. He is best known for his novel The Blacker the Berry: A Novel of Negro Life (1929), which explores discrimination within the black community based on skin color, with lighter skin being more highly valued. #blackhistory#blackhistorymonth#playwright#writer#blackmen
