  • Have you ever wondered why some people gain weight while others lose weight, even though they eat the same number of calories? Every person has a unique metabolism, like a fingerprint. The number of calories your body needs every day is called your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, or TDEE. There are four components of your TDEE.

1️⃣Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), aka RMR is the biggest contributor to your TDEE, accounting for ~60-70% of the calories you burn in a day. Your BMR is the number of calories your body needs to maintain all of your normal body functions, and it depends on age, sex, body composition, activity level, and many other factors.

2️⃣Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) accounts for ~15% of your TDEE. This includes all activities of daily living (ADLs), such as walking around your office, climbing stairs at home, cooking, gardening, typing, fidgeting, etc. Basically, every movement that isn’t structured exercise contributes to NEAT.

3️⃣The Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) is the amount of energy your body needs in order to digest and absorb the food and drinks that you consume throughout the day. TEF accounts for ~10% of your TDEE.

4️⃣Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT) is just what it sounds- the calories you burn during structured exercise. This includes going for a run, going to the gym, yoga, pilates, weight-lifting, and playing sports. If you don’t exercise, this number will be 0. For people who exercise regularly, EAT accounts for ~5% of your TDEE.
