Happy birthday to German biologist, philosopher, and artist Ernst Haeckel. In addition to describing and naming thousands of new species Haeckel was behind some of history’s most impressive meetings of science and art, a body of imagery which reached its zenith in his Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature) published in 1904. See more of his stunning images, and read about his unique idea of “monism” which lies behind them, in our essay by Dr Mario A. Di Gregorio (click link in bio and search "Haeckel") -- and we've also more than 50 of his images available as prints in our inline shop (click link in bio and go to shop).⠀

Discovery and Characterization of Cas9 Inhibitors Disseminated across Seven Bacterial Phyla. Scientists developed a high-throughput approach to screen for type II-A CRISPR-Cas inhibitors in metagenomic libraries based on their functional activity rather than sequence homology or genetic context. This approach led to the discovery of four novel anti-CRISPR proteins, homologs of which are widely distributed across seven bacterial phyla. doi.org/10.1016/j.chom.2019.01.003 #ella_maru_studio#journalcover#sciart#science#medcalillustration#medicalart#scienceart#ella_maru_studio#womaninscience

I was reminded earlier of just how much I love this hoop I stitched a while back, so I thought it's a good time to share it with you all and maybe start thinking of other egg and sperm designs to work on! I'll keep the sperm style the same but there's a lot of fun to be had coming up with new ways to depict the egg!
It was a time crunch to get this done in time for a show but I did it! This is an illustration of two Eastern Screech Owls, displaying both a red and grey morph. This species is found all over western North America, ranging from Canada to Mexico. These owls are also quite small, ranging around 6 to 9 inches in length.
Sex and violence pair well. I assumed that this was mostly pop culture glorifying masculinity through association with aggression and sex… but there’s apparently a tight biological link. Multiple regions in the brain have now been identified as containing cells specific for behaviors related to aggression or mating. Studied mostly in male mice (because mouse brain are pretty similar to human brains), manipulations of vomeronasal organ, amygdala, and hypothalamus can alter mating and aggressive behaviors . As expected, these regions all connect to each other. This makes intuitive sense, because mating and aggressive behaviors are both important social behaviors strongly tried to pheromones in other mammals.
Anyway, I was surprised to see just how convoluted these two social behaviors are in our head. Maybe affection and anger really is on the opposite ends of the same spectrum.

Pseudozyma aphidis you're so beautiful! Pseudozyma species are yeast-like organisms classified in the Ustilaginales. Here my guys are growing on a chemically defined media with different concentrations of sodium tellurite. These fungi (yeah they belong to the fungus kingdom) are able to reduce tellurite (a very toxic metalloid oxyanion) in tellurium nanoparticles (less toxic). Due to the nanoparticles, the colour of the organism goes black (control Pseudozyma is white). For the size: the blue line measures 0.5 cm. These pics have been taken after a month of incubation. Fungi are amazing!

Did you hear that ESA recently named their Mars rover #RosalindFranklin ? Rosalind Franklin the woman helped to discover the structure of DNA 🧬 and Rosalind Franklin the rover will help search for life on Mars.
Stickers, t-shirts, and more available in bio link! 😲
I am sincerely apologetic for posting so many indecent illustrations. Nudity is unacceptable for a public page such as this. In the future I will only share drawings of dinosaurs wearing appropriate attire.
Thank you, and I hope someday you can forgive me. -Keenan
We've got another deep sea dude for #molluscmonday . Besides stealing the hearts of the public with its cuteness, this species is one of the cirrate dumbo octopuses. Which species? We're not sure yet. Members of this species are still being described.
Picking thread for the next one while paint dries. Can I tell you how blessed I feel that I have had FOUR years of never ending ideas for the next one..... sometimes I have so many ideas that it’s overwhelming and I’ve had to learn to write them down rather than rely on my memory . Feeling blessed 🙏
Visit our gallery tomorrow and experience the scents of the Universe as we light #KatiePaterson 's 'Candle (from Earth into a Black Hole)'.

A scented white candle that burns down over 12 hours, creates a journey through space via scent. The candle is formed of layers, each containing a unique perfume corresponding to a planet or place in the universe: as if taking off from Earth, travelling to the Moon, the Sun, Mars and Jupiter, via the stars, and into a vacuum.
I can FINALLY share this hoop! @stephaniekoebele commissioned this for the lovely @cheburashka24 for being an absolutely bad ass and finishing her PhD! I’m so incredibly happy I was able to make a super special gift for Alesia. I hope you’re totally rocking your new post doc life!
