This poem is about our tendency as humans to turn a blind eye to everything unsettling that exists in plain sight. We refuse to engage with problems that are not our own as well as those that have arisen from no fault of our own. We do not engage because we do not wish to understand. We feign interest and politely observe only to lapse moments later into mild bashfulness and inevitable indifference.
•
Nonetheless, we teach our children to reach out, away from themselves, right back to us as soon as things go awry and they are unsure about where they stand in our grandly upheld schemes of right and wrong.
Until one day they’ve grown up, and it is us who longer knows where we stand with them. We so dearly want to understand, and begin to attempt to, only to find ourselves incapable of reaching out at all.

Hi again. That was a bit of a depressing caption, I’m sorry! I’ve had a strange winter and have emerged wholly grateful to the people in my life who hear out my silences. It’s impossible to tend to everybody in your life you suspect may be struggling, and we all are guilty of selective indifference. It is not cruel to prioritise yourself. That said, it is cruel to deny somebody the opportunity to do the same for themselves. Listen when you can, and do what you can, the value of the time you give others fluctuates (at least partially) in accordance with their degree of need. So, assess intuitively and invest your attention non-judgmentally. •
Generosity has as much to do with what you accept from others as it does with what you give away. 🤝💛
