  • I almost didn’t go to Yangon, thinking it’d be like any other Southeast Asian city. And at first, with the traffic and chaos, it felt like it was.
.
.
Luckily, of my 25 hours there, I spent 5 with @unchartedhorizonsmyanmar - cycling some 30 kilometres through a rural village where locals still live in wooden houses on stilts, surrounded by mangroves, pagodas, temples, mosques and churches. In white shirts and green skirts, their cute little faces covered in thanaka (a natural paste), kids walked to school. In their backyards, women whipped up bowls of mohinga (noodles in fish broth - staple breakfast) and cooked dosa (the Indian Burmese were first brought here by the British). The small markets buzzed with activity, locals drank tea at the street stalls, men ferried passengers at the boat dock, the streets echoed with mingalaba as we cycled through. Past the plastic dump, we landed up at the workshop of a social enterprise that upcycles waste to make really cool bags, bookmarks, lamps and baskets.
.
.
Then we got onto a small boat with our bicycles, and landed up on a river island, 5 km in circumference, no cars. Chatted briefly with the 84-year-old head monk of the island monastery, saw monks out to collect alms and stopped for a tea leaf salad in a little house shop.
.
.
Nope, Yangon is not like any other Southeast Asian city; it’s not like any other city at all.

  • New blog post: winter walking in Innsbruck, Austria

We've written about winter walking and our recommendations for doing it while in Innsbruck on the blog today - the link is in our bio. We loved getting out there and it really is easy.

But. We also are aware there has been huge snowfall in the Alps the last few days and weeks. Dangerous levels - people have died. And it continues to fall.

So we have a simple caveat: be aware. Going out and exploring on foot is amazingly fun, but checking with local tourism offices for things like weather forecasts, snow levels, what is open or recommended, is vital. Wear warm clothing, don't overstretch yourself, and take advice.

We've put our blog out there because we still want to encourage and inspire - but safely so.

So we wrote this caption to start a conversation: what do you do to stay safe while travelling?

  • I’m enjoying this feeling of awe at the small, beautiful details of this snowy city. ❄️💕
.
I’m paying a lot more attention around me in this pleasantly unfamiliar weather, perhaps from the need to walk with slower, more tentative steps in the snow. The payoff is wonderful...

  • For nearly three weeks our family has been doing a daily #plankchallenge -- adding another #ritual to family life that helps to keep our ebbs ebbing and our flows flowing while we explore new places. We are up to three minutes! We also climbed the massive rock you see in the background -- all 749 stairs :-) #Colombia 🇨🇴

  • I spent a lot of money when I was younger traveling in a pretty disorganized and haphazard way—like this trip, when I didn’t realize I needed a visa to visit China, let alone Tibet, until like two days before I left—but I wouldn’t change it for anything. The world, even the more remote corners, is changing so quickly that the places I visited maybe don’t exist anymore, at least not in the same way.

  • Cafe Tortoni est. 1858 was so much fun. Had a mini reunion with a few favs!! We ate, drank wine, watched Tango and enjoyed each other’s company .

Apparently this place was the frequent hangout of a famous Argentinian poet Alfonsina Storni. Anyone know who she is ?

Special shoutout the Stefanie, Steffy and Léon for the invite .. Day 22 of 90 .
