  • It's Official! - #Astronomers just confirmed a new Moon in our Solar System! 🌟🌒
Everybody, meet our newest family member, Hippocamp! Neptune’s 14th moon, and the solar system's 348th satellite. #LikeABOS
• The 36-km-wide world lies about 65,400 miles (105,250 kilometers) from its parent planet and completes one orbit every 23 hours.
Neptune's moon system is different to other planets thanks to the impact of Triton.
This gigantic Moon was pulled in from further out in the solar system, disrupting whatever satellites may have already existed close to the ice giant. Today's inner moons like Hippocamp, probably formed out of the debris from the original moons and took form shortly after Triton's orbit stabilised.
🔭 Astronomers at SETI used the @nasahubble / Anne Verbiscer of the @universityofvirginiia

  • What's that green streak in front of the Andromeda galaxy? A meteor. While photographing the Andromeda galaxy in 2016, near the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower, a sand-sized rock from deep space crossed right in front of our Milky Way Galaxy's far-distant companion. The small meteor took only a fraction of a second to pass through this 10-degree field. Have you ever seen a meteor shower? Here in this image The meteor flared several times while braking violently upon entering Earth's atmosphere. The green color was created, at least in part, by the meteor's gas glowing as it vaporized. Although the exposure was timed to catch a Perseids meteor, the orientation of the imaged streak seems a better match to a meteor from the Southern Delta Aquariids, a meteor shower that peaked a few weeks earlier. Not coincidentally, the Perseid Meteor Shower peaks again tonight.
So amazing 🌙💫 Image Credit & Copyright: Fritz Helmut Hemmerich @nasa

  • This is a galaxy cluster called Abell 370 that contains an astounding assortment of several hundred galaxies tied together by the mutual pull of gravity. That's a lot of galaxies to be guarding, and just in this one cluster!

  • This is an approximation of what the evening sky would look like if Saturn were as close to the Earth as the moon. In actuality, if Saturn were as close to us as the moon, we would likely be ravaged by catacylsmic tidal waves which uncover and re-cover enormous portions of the earth before the gravitational force of Saturn threw the moon out of orbit and tore the earth to shreds.
