Decided to get downtown last night and wander around with the camera and a close friend. As I was taking this shot, the owner of The Peanut Shoppe waved for us to come inside. As we stepped into the shop, the scent was intoxicating. An aromatic blend of roasted nuts mixed with a sweetness of freshly toasted candies. It felt like walking into a candy shop of an era passed complete with vintage Planter’s memorabilia and practices long since replaced by bulk manufacturing shrouded out of sight. I decided to go with a quarter pound of their peanut butter logs and a quarter pound of Sour Patch Kids. The logs were absolutely incredible. Similar to the inside of a Zagnut bar, yet the freshness and tender care into making them dazzled my taste buds. A husband and wife, working in tandem, to keep a long-standing tradition alive. They don’t have an Instagram account or else I’d be tagging them. They do have a Facebook. Go follow them and if you’re ever in the area, stop in and get yourself some freshly roasted goodness. #supportlocal
“Heads Up” | Street Photography in Downtown Dallas...well, it’s a little tricky. I’m definitely more used to doing street photography in action-packed, fast-paced, people heavy metropolitan areas (NYC, Karachi, D.C, etc). The benefit with those areas is that there is always something going on. You miss a shot? Darn, oh look a new shot opportunity moments later. Downtown Dallas? That wasn’t really the case. Besides the ton of construction (this guy), often times you’d find yourself being the only person on an empty street, or there’s only one other person on the street (que awkwardness when you point your camera at them). It’s hard to really blend into anything and become anonymous. It’s hard when you miss a perfect moment after 10-20 minutes of waiting. What it has done, is make me a more patient observer. I have to time my shots better. I have to come up with more creative angles, perspectives, heights, etc to find more opportunities. It’s making me a more creative individual capable of being a dynamic shooter in a not so dynamic environment. I’m definitely excited to see how much I can add to my street shooting style by the end of the year with these experiences. May not be my most captivating or technically proficient work yet, but it’s all a growing process. Or...maybe it was just too cold for Texans to be out walking (40 degrees 😂). | Dallas Street Photography •
