  • Tonight’s #filmfriday is the 1993 film The House of the Spirits. Based on the novel by Isabel Allende and directed by Bille August, the film follows the life of a clairvoyant named Clara (Meryl Streep) from girlhood through marriage and raising a family during a time of social upheaval in Chile. With a star-studded cast, the story spans many decades and glimpses the lives of her various family members, eventually focusing on her husband (Jeremy Irons) and daughter (Winona Ryder). I often love a good long movie and this one always gets me good as it contains forbidden love and forgiveness with major character development and a hint of the supernatural. The atmosphere of this film changes drastically as the narrative progresses, starting in a dreamy, cheerful house that slowly transitions to the onset of militaristic occupation which delivers a big dose of reality and drama. Check it out! #thehouseofthespirits #filmfriday

  • The lovely @dumbledawnbook asked me to name #fivebooksimthankfulfor.
Not going to lie, this was really hard!

I'm thankful for The House of the Spirits because it's just so wonderful and taught me how a book can take you to another world.
I'm thankful for One Day because it was the only book I took on my year abroad in 2013 (I had high hopes of just reading foreign language books), and I turned to it whenever I needed an escape and to just read something easy. It's the most well thumbed book I own.
I'm thankful for The Remains of the Day because I studied it at school and I still love it. So it must be good!
I'm thankful for A History of Britain in 21 Women because it brings attention to some amazing women who are often left out of history, taught me about my own country and is very inspirational.
The final book I'm thankful for is the book I'm about to start. In this case it's The Kite Runner, but I'm generally thankful that there are so many amazing books to choose from.

  • Book 34 of #abookfromeverycountry - CHILE
At long last I have finally finished The House of the Spirits. It’s taken me what seems like an age, and I think the reason behind that is it is such a rich and descriptive book. After just a few pages it feels like 50 pages worth of action/character growth has happened, so I needed breaks a lot more often than usual, which spaced the reading out. (Either that or this heat has got my attention span waning 😅). It tells the story of 4 generations of a Chilean family with the changing political landscape as the backdrop. I disliked most of the misogynistic male characters but vastly enjoyed the female ones who were much more eccentric, mystical and community minded. It is a tale that is brilliantly woven together over the generations of the family. Overall I would give it 3.5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

• Mel

The first time I heard about #thehouseofthespirits by #IsabelAllende was 9 years ago and I wasn't very fond of this type of novels. My crush was reading it and she wanted me to do the same. Maybe I am too late but I'm eventually loving it 😍 Everyone talks good about it and I can not say anything wrong (except that I hate Esteban). Clara is so far my favourite character but I am still at the beginning and I need to know the other family members. I'm really curious, I hope I will read it fast 😍 (despite my exams...) • Mel

  • Signed Saturday
“Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?” Urrea asked the incomparable Isabel Allende when I saw her on tour in 2017. “No,” Allende responded. “It was my third choice. My first choice was chorus girl.” While I didn’t end up loving In the Midst of Winter, Allende herself was an absolute joy to see in person. She said she won’t be doing any more book tours after this one. “What I want is to stay home, write, sleep with my dog and my lover,” said Allende to a round of cheers. “And I do have a lover,” She clarified, “I’m not making him up.” She also passed on her optimistic outlook, for both people and governments, even when things look to her at their worst. “I have lived long enough to know that we evolve,” Allende said. “People say we go in circles, but no—we walk in spirals. There is growth.”
.
Signed Saturdays is a weekly series at While Reading and Walking. I’m an avid book collector, and have been lucky enough to meet many of my favorite authors over the years. Each Saturday, I’ll celebrate and tell the story of one of my signed books. Feel free to join in at #SignedSaturdays.

  • Hello and a happy new week! Which was the first #book you ever bought all by yourselves? For me it was #TheHouseoftheSpirits by #IsabelAllende when I was still a teenager, more than 20 years ago! The story of powerful landlord Esteban Trueba and his wife Clara who possesses the power of foresight, as well as the stories of their offspring in an unstable social and political environment in a country that could be Chile but it is never made clear throughout the book. One of the best #books I've ever #read, also made a film but to my opinion not very successfully.
