Fridays are for the Party Animals and this Friday's Party Animal is the Polar Bear (Ursus Meritimus)! I know I posted a Polar Bear photo just a couple of weeks ago . . . but it is getting ready to snow here in Kansas City and that just made me think of Polar Bears! The polar bear is a carnivore whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle. It is classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN due to habitat loss related to climate change. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice where they hunt for their main food source, seals. Because of their dependence on the sea ice for hunting, polar bears are classified as marine mammals.
I took this photo in early April of 2016 out on the sea ice off the coast of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. These were the last bears that we saw on that trip . . . and it was a very cool way to end an incredible trip. Anyway, I thought everybody might like a little "cuteness" overload as we head into the weekend!
