Stunning sunrise 🌄
American River has arguably the most stunning sunrises on the Island.
When you can't sleep and it's so cold so on goes the trackies, the hoodie and the fluffy socks and out comes the camera for some sunrise shots at 6am! 🌅🌅🌅

ROSENBERGS SAND/HEATH GOANNA
It’s that time of year again where the female goannas are ready to lay their eggs. The female will find an active termite mound and start digging her incubation chamber early in the morning and will be finished by late afternoon on the second day, she will then lay 13-14 eggs, finished by midnight, she’ll then backfill the entrance and the termites busily repair the damage, she’ll stand guard for the next week to make sure other goannas don’t eat her eggs.
The termite mound is a constant temperature of 30c and a humidity just on saturation, so perfect for incubating her eggs, when the young ones hatch they feed on the protein rich termites, they can’t come straight out as in the termite mound is full carbon dioxide, so they dig a little hole and will take in little of the corrosive oxygen each day to get their lungs ready for the oxygen rich environment. The young goannas come out in spring when the outside of the mound is the same temperature as the inside. The fertilized eggs will let off a gas that the termites don’t like so the leave the fertilized eggs alone, not fertilized eggs are destroyed.
Fantastic having a week of cooler weather, we’re seeing echidnas out and about.
The Echidna has a inactive body temperature of 31.5c so temperatures over 32c can cause heat stress, so when it’s very hot they bury themselves deep in the ground where it is cooler and they’ll go into a state of torpor, slowing their metabolism and breathing down to about 1 breath per minute, not coming out until it’s cool enough.
Winter is one of the best times to view the Echidna as it’s their breeding season, so they’re a lot more active.
