  • New on the Blog | Living and Eating in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 this was the top thing I was anxious about before departing the USA.
No matter what country you’re living in, no matter how similar the food is, there’s going to be an adjustment.

  • Getting around in a foreign country can be trivial - and depending on your style of travel - can open your eyes to so much more than the typical tourist experience. In this photo I'm in a small town on the outskirts of PV because I told my driver I wanted to see what a day in the life of the authentic local towns offered. This led to a day of whimsical adventure that no standard tour could offer. Here are a few tips on how I've gotten around:⁣
⁣
Tip #1:⁣ 🤳🏽
Uber at least once - I always Uber/Grab/Didi/Kareem/[insert other global driver app i'm forgetting here] my way over from the airport for one very specific reason. These are drivers who are on the road everyday - therefore they know where to go and what to do. I've made it a point to chat up every last one to give me the top 5 places to visit while in the given city - and they shoot a list that you're able to check against yours as you go. ⁣
⁣
Tip #2:⁣ 🙋🏽‍♂️
Flip your Uber driver into a tour guide - This won't always be likely especially if your driver isn't bi-lingual (awesome if you are). However this has worked out for me several times - especially in Cape Town. My questions around the city led to him offering to be a tour guide if I needed one - and a day I tailored based off his recommendations - peppered in w/ the local attractions I also wanted to fit. Simply negotiate what you feel is fair for a day rate - taking into account their time/gas and value they provide. There are still trade offs - Pro: You're on your own time and not on the schedule of a tour group | Con: I've found that they may not be able to provide the historical context/are not as knowledgeable on a given topic/structure/area of interest - as a tour guide would be. ⁣

Tip #3:⁣ 💰
Compare rates - I've worked w/ hotel, airport, tour package drivers - you name it. What I always do to ensure I'm getting a good deal - is to compare the rate to a local app and use that as my bargaining tool if I'm getting an inflated rate. In Phuket we actually had a driver being sent over from our villa - and when I did a quick comparison and saw that a Grab was cheaper - that was quickly canceled.

  • Hola, Salut, 你好, Ciao, Oi Tudo Bem, Annyeoghaseyo, Namaste! HAPPY International Mother Language Day! 💜 Take the time to celebrate the cultural diversity through language and conversation. Learn a new language, listen to music from various countries, watch international movies and shows, and/or Talk to someone who speaks a language different from yours and learn how to say hi. Language is one of the most profound and rewarding ways to immerse yourself in custom and culture. Also, be willing to offer and teach someone your langauge as well. It's a cycle to build character, community, and communication. What language are you going to study today?
Check my story for more on my journey of language learning! 💛🌎🌍🌏
