  • With a focus on materials and their physical qualities at the centre of his work, South Korean designer Seo Jeonghwa has carried the same ethos into his designs for Et Cetera, a café and wine bar in Seoul. Stripping away all polish, Seo opted for a bare-bones look that pairs a raw concrete interior with an unpolished edge on the custom-made pieces of furniture. For the bases of the seats and tables which were made from cast aluminium, the joints where the pieces were welded together were intentionally preserved, an acknowledgement of the craft and labour involved in their creation. The decision to place a bench through the café’s glass wall blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, with the full transparency of the façade demonstrating Seo’s no-frills approach to design.

  • Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh

The Sanchi University of Buddhist and Indic Studies(SUBIS) Master Planning Project was awarded to ARCH-EN DESIGN through a National Competition. The University was established in the year 2012 by Government of Madhya Pradesh as a University of International Importance, with its vicinity to Sanchi Buddhist Circuit.

The site presented great levels of complexity with its contoured topography. The Planning has been done with great emphasis on Landscape.
1) The Sanchi University of Buddhist and Indic Studies (SUBIS) will set an international example of Sustainability and Bioremediation with a Net Zero Strategy.
2) The idea of SUBIS will be to create a Landmark - a university where architecture and nature merge and form a safe environment for students. It will be an attractive and highly functional research place and a green recreational haven for all residing students and faculty.
3) The University will grow out of the landscaped hillocks, and consistently bring students close to nature both inside and outside, to create a calming architecture focused on the users.
4) The architectural expression will therefore be based on an organic, soft and humane design. The existing landscapes & silhouettes will be respected & magnified. The entire campus will aesthetically incorporate various features of architecture & sculpture of various Buddhist & Indic societies and civilizations from across the globe.

  • We recently responded to the governments planning reforms consultation. The changes proposed included relaxing change of use rules for retail units to make some changes of use class ‘permitted development’. And a proposal to allow some form of roof addition/extensions (i.e upward ‘space’) to be permitted development, in order to bring additional housing forward.
The Trust’s response {in full on our website} has expressed strong concerns regarding both issues; we feel that that the answer to the housing and high street crisis is not via relaxing planning obligations or sidelining the planning system (which exists to manage change appropriately) as this could have further adverse effects on the quality of housing and the vitality, amenity and character of places and accelerate harmful change and loss. Similarly whilst we support urban intensification we do not believe that upwards extensions can be put under a permitted development umbrella due to the complex planning, and design considerations for each proposal.
We’ve since signed an open letter to to the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, joining signatories Local Government Association @sheltercharity @riba @cpre @rtpiplanners @insallarch and @civicvoice #planning #community #welovebath #heritage #highstreet #townplanning #sustainability #design #worldheritage #worldheritagesite #conservation #city #urban #urbandesign #urbanplanning #towns #architecture #buildings #housing
