  • Berlin happened to be the start point of my big Europe trip. So, here’s the first impression:
1. It’s too warm for the winter (we came prepared haha).
2. Busses run on time!😍 How neat is that?
3. Berlin is big. I can already see what they mean when they say that there is no centre in this city.
4. Berlin’s architecture took me by surprise. Considering the low range of variation in architecture across European cities, the last city to wow me was London. Berlin is no less!
5. We will save money here. Eating out is shockingly cheap and buying groceries is cheaper than in Munich or France and certainly compared to London.
6. Last but not least, why are there so many Russians in the city?😅

  • Berlin: summing up
⠀
Berlin's signature attraction such as the #BrandenburgGate, the #Fernsehturm, the #Gendarmenmarkt and the #EastSideGallery (Berlin’s Wall) will probably take you just a couple of hours in total. We literally just took photos there and that’s it. So don’t expect much.
⠀
There’s no need to pay for the view at the TV tower! Go the #ReichstagBuilding and get it for free with a free audioguide as an extra perk.
⠀
To find out who was the first spy, who really cracked the Enigma code and who knows more about you – the NSA or Facebook - visit @spionagemuseum
P.S. Don’t forget about the laser room:)
⠀
For shopping go to: Kurfürstendamm, Tauentzienstrasse, Potsdamer Platz, Alte/Neue Schönhauser Strasse.
⠀
And explore the whole #Mitte neighborhood. Walking around is always the best way to explore a new place:)

  • Must-try foods in Berlin:
⠀
🌭“Currywurst mit Pommes” at Curry 61 or Curry Mitte - a pork sausage with french fries typically cut into slices and seasoned with curry ketchup. Today it’s one of the most famous street-food snacks in Germany.
⠀
🍗“Wiener Schnitzel” at Jolesch Restaurant - basically a peace of veal coated with flour, eggs and bread crumbs and fried in butter. Simply delicious.
⠀
🍝“Spätzle” at Lebensmittel in Mitte - a sort of pasta traditionally served as a side to meaty dishes and sometimes dropped into soups. Often goes with cheese... well, you got me😅
⠀
☕️Cool coffee places: Roamers, The Barn, Refinery High End.

  • Why is Brezhnev kissing Honecker on the Berlin Wall?
⠀
Did you know that the most famous image that appears in Berlin’s East Side Gallery was based on an actual photograph?
⠀
The kiss itself really wasn’t supposed to inspire any romantic notions – it was just of a ‘’fraternal’’ nature – ‘’Bruderkuss’’, as Germans call it.
⠀
The “deadly love” mentioned in the title refers to the military agreement between the two states – obliging East Germany to provide ships, machinery and chemical equipment to the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union to provide fuel and nuclear equipment to East Germany.

  • What is Berlin?
⠀
There’s more to Berlin than just beer, kebabs and techno.
⠀
Berlin is the city that has more bridges than Venice and more museums than rainy days per year.
Berlin is the place where you can meet responsible parents with multiple piercings and professors with tattoos all over their bodies.
Berlin is where the little green guy on a pedestrian traffic light has its own shop.
Berlin is home to Germany’s first vegan sex shop and the capital that every year spends €35 million on cleaning graffiti off its walls.
Berlin is where people are serious about recycling and don’t throw away their empty bottles, leaving them below the bin for others to collect.

  • Checkpoint Charlie - the iconic symbol of the Cold War.
⠀
The Berlin border crossing was first set up in August 1961, when communist East Germany erected the Berlin Wall to prevent its citizens from fleeing to the Democratic West. Although there were several crossing points, Checkpoint Charlie was the only one gateway where Allied diplomats, military personnel and foreign tourists to pass into Berlin’s Soviet sector. On November 9, 1989, the East German government finally erased its travel restrictions and allowed people to move freely between East and West.
