  • I cannot tell you how ecstatic I am to have found a veterinarian that I can love and trust. This man is so personable. So thorough. So very knowledgeable and comfortable around squirrels!!! he even volunteers at the local wildlife rehab center!!!! A couple days ago I noticed Rizzo had some swelling in his upper gums when I went to clip his teeth. So I took him in to make sure that he was OK. He had a full exam and walked away with a clean bill of health. I was thrilled to know that I’m doing just fine clipping his teeth. And proud I can do it on my own. But I’ll tell you something… It’s a lot easier when hes sedated and there’s an assistant on hand LMAO. For those of you who have never seen a squirrel who needs their teeth clipped this may be an interesting video for you. #squirrelsofinstagram #petsquirrel #scizzorizzo #schizo #trimteeth #vetvisit #veterinarian #wildlife #wheatlandanimalhospital @wheatlandanimalhospital #squirrel #incisors #malocclusion

  • Placentophagy is the medical term for when an animal eats their own placenta postpartum. It is an extremely common and natural phenomenon, with nearly every single placental bearing species partaking in this fetu-licious feast. The notable exceptions are camels (too sandy probably), seals, whales, and dolphins, but thats about it. Even humans, and all other primates are considered placentophagic too.

So why do cows and other animals eat their placenta?

I have heard of several old wives tales about this act, with the most common being that the placenta is nutritious and full of vitamins and minerals. That seems like an ok theory, so I looked it up and it turns out that the nutritional profile of raw placenta is a protein content of 6%, fat content 0.78%, and high levels of iron, calcium, phosphous, sodium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and copper. Hormones detect include b-endorphins, 11-Deoxycortisol, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, 7-ketodehydroepiandrosterone, aldosterone, allopregnanolone, androstenedione, corticosterone, cortisol, cortisone, dehydroepiandrosterone, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol, estriol, estrone, melatonin, progesterone, and testosterone. So it is highly nutritious, even with some added hormones…how naughty.

In humans, placental consumption has anecdotally been attributed to a variety of health benefits including a reduction of postpartum depression, increased maternal bonding, decreased recovery time, alleviation of hemmorhage, and much more.

In animals, placentophagy has been shown to improve maternal-offspring bonding, and promote endogenous opioid release for an analgesic effect postpartum.

I think there is some evidence to confirm at least mildly positive health benefits for this practice.

But like many things in animal behaviour, there are likely other reasons afoot. Placentophagy has also been suggested to be a predator defence mechanism. Essentially the theory is that by cleaning up any trace that a birth has occurred nearby, predators will not be as attracted to the vulnerable newborn.

  • Day 1 to today- down 8lbs and 7 inches! I’m feeling great both inside and out-
I’ve touched on this before, but really it’s my mindset that’s really made a change. I’m more in control of my emotions and try to stay positive. Do you want to come along on the next 6 weeks with me?

  • The 1VM class had the privilege of participating in the ZEW Wetlab today and tomorrow. Some of the wetlab available were reptile restraint and medicine, marine animal anatomy and physiology, darting, small exotic animal dentistry, avian reproductive surgery, and bird of prey medicine! Tomorrow will be another three wetlabs!
A wise professor once said, "don't let your education get in the way of your education." While we have tests looming over our heads, we need to take the time to find the joy in our area of interest.
Happy studying, and remember to take a break and enjoy the sun today!
