  • Carcharias taurus (Grey Nurse Shark) is easily one of the most placid sharks in the ocean. This placid nature made them easy targets for spear fishermen using explosive head spears in the 1950s and 1960s in NSW, Australia. They were targeted as their ‘scary’ looking appearance led people to believe they were ‘man-eaters’. They are supposedly the first shark in the world to ever be protected when they were first listed as vulnerable in 1984 in Australia. Today they are listed as critically endangered. Many of their key habitat sites are also favored recreational fishing spots, so it’s not uncommon to see a Grey Nurse with fishing gear attached or injuries from fishing gear - indicating we need to protect their key habitat sites better. #sharks #nsw #australia #uwphotography #discoverocean
