Ilona is somebody with a ton of knowledge of both wine and spirits, and I love how she directed the conversation from our identity as a distillery to how that identity is linked to Napa Valley, our home. • I’m a big fan of Springbank whisky. The Springbank 10YO is an one of my favourite whisky. It was very interesting to taste old Springbank. And it’s Springbank 12YO from 70th.
The colour is amber. The nose is very sweet and powerful with notes of grilled vegetables, apple jam, oak, butterscotch, vanilla ice-cream, plums, light naphthalene and red pepper. The palate is sweet with notes of naphthalene, plums wine, vanilla ice-cream, oak and old furniture varnish. The finish is long, sweet and dry with plums, spices, apple and plum jam, grass and old furniture varnish. This Springbank is closed to be perfect! It has very good balance and very unique taste. I like it very much! I gave 94 points! 🔥🔥🔥👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  • Ardbeg Rob Roy - Employees Only
.
Employees Only (@employeesonlysyd) is a new’ish bar in the Sydney CBD imported all the way from New York where the original joint can be found. I remember my mate Charlie (@charlietakesphotos) telling me about this...I was wondering why he was asking me about a recruitment agency...figured he must have got the wrong Darn?
Took me awhile to work it out...that Employees Only is an actual bar...I’m sure I’m not the only that has fallen for that? I hope. I wonder if you could work that into meeting locations when all the rooms in your office are full- Meeting Location: Employees Only Barrack St. Guaranteed to make any office meeting a million times better.
Anyway when I ventured down here for the 1st time late last year, I was surprised that the name hadn’t thrown peeps off the trail and it was solidly packed on a Friday eve.
It’s in a great location in the city, there are so many well established joints around this part of the city or new ones opening up on a seemingly regular basis. 10 more bars and I could start referring to this area as “Lil-Melbs”.
Anyway the most important part of the evening there, was getting a seat at the bar...which looked gorgeous and finding my trusty bottle of Ardbeg 10 YO (@ardbeg) so Luke could whip up a cracking Ardbeg Rob Roy. Needles to say, on this point alone Employees Only gets a massive tick/Rob Roy Stamp of Approval (god it’d be cool to have a wax stamp I could randomly brand on bar top when this happens).
So if you haven’t been already, get amongst it and check out this epic bar.

  • WHISKY FACT WEDNESDAY -
A "Shot" of Whisky

Having a shot? Of course you are - but who was the first to have one? The word itself goes back a long long time and no one can quite agree on where it started being used in reference to a measure of alcohol but herein follows one possible explanation.

Imagine you're a cattle driver in the Old West, the year is 1850 and your throat is parched from long days on the dusty trail.

You need something to quench your powerful thirst but alas, you don't get paid til the job is done, 2 weeks from now.
Even still, you have your trusty shotgun slung over your shoulder and you've come across the only town within a days ride. You saunter into the drinking hole, bat wing doors swinging shut behind you and slam a shell down on the bar. "One shot of whisky barkeep, if you please"

Bullets in those days cost about 12 cents, the same as a measure of whisky. Barter was more common in those days so it's certainly not out of the question that the term became interchangeable between the buckshot used in a trail-hand's shotgun and the whisky they traded for.
Of course, you'll have to take this with a grain of salt or two, stories from the Old West tend to get stretched beyond belief more often than not.

All the same, slainte!

  • Something about the color black... It exudes elegance and class.
I used to own couple black cars until I got tired of washing them constantly. 😂
This bottle was wrapped in a silver foil which I haven't seen in other Mac's. And when I unwrapped it, ooooh, that black bottle.😍 And it carried some heft. Size is between the regular releases and the rare cask.
At 40% abv, I was worried it would taste watered down. Color was a little light, too.
This was one of the rare times where I actually nosed chocolate. And there was the usual orange, dried fruits and honey. Palate and finish confirmed those flavors. Predominantly matured in "sherry seasoned" casks but not too sweet. Nice medium long finish.
Yes it did taste and feel a tiny bit light. It would have been better imo if it weren't watered down to 40%
This bottle came to my possession via @whiskywalker
Thanks for the assist, brother👊🥃

  • Next up, another of the “bottom shelf” whiskeys in my 50ML stash is this Early Times Kentucky Whisky. No Y, I noticed. I expect its not a Bourbon because of the used barrel aging. However, it does land solidly in the category for nose and palate. All the appropriate stuff is there, there’s a little cinnamon, some muted cherry and vanilla, and plenty of oak. I’ll tell you what, this isn’t bad at all, though I’d love to try this at 45% or higher. The 40% is a little bit flat for me, though some might prefer it. Good dram, @earlytimeswhisky .

.
Some terminology as mini #nooblet for ya!!
.
When I started this journey I kept hearing ppl say, "some of the whiskey is lost through Angel's share" and "a certain percentage will be gone from the Angel's share"
.
I kept thinking to myself...
.
Who's this Angel lady and why does she keep getting free whiskey from each barrel??? 🤔
.
I mean, what a greedy ass!! 😡 And is she hiring?? 😁🤞

  • Wednesday Weekly Whiskey review is up! Click on the link in bio or read below! 🥃

Name: Lot No. 40 Canadian Rye Whisky

Color: Gold Brown

Nose: Sweet, candy vanilla

Taste: Sharp burn, sweet finish, caramel, rye spice

Review:

Sometimes I forget about Canada. I don’t do it deliberately; I just forget them, but after trying Lot No.40 I will not do that anymore. Lot No. 40 Canadian Rye Whisky is a 100% unmalted rye gained in virgin oak barrels. Lot No. 40 is a 7th generation small batch pot still small batch receipt that is has no coloring.

Lot No. 40 Produced by Pernod- Ricard and is a revival of a discontinued whisky that saw its last production in the late 1990’s. It is named after a plot of land owned by a Joshua Booth who is one of the ancestors of Hiram Walker. Walker is an American who moved to Ontario, Canada and set up a massive distillery business in the 1800’s.

This whisky has a nice flavor and I would definitely enjoy it in my Old Fashions or Manhattans. If you haven’t yet tried increasing the quality of your whisky for cocktails I strongly recommend it. I realize people think, “What’s the point of spending the extra money?” I used to think the same way. The point is, it’s worth it for the taste! Enjoying a cocktail in the comfort of your own home with higher quality whisky is worth every penny.

Priced at approximately $50. It is good and at a good price. I will be adding to my bar at home.

If you like it, drink it!

Christopher
