Another let-down – to put it mildly – was the white truffle. Now, as you may know, white truffle has a very short shelf-life. This is because its culinary value lies in its aroma, which doesn’t last long (a few days at most) after it’s dug from the ground. No reputable chef should use white truffle unless they can guarantee to get it from soil to table within this short ‘aroma window’. This is why many restaurants jack up the price of pasta dishes with white truffle. And Le Meurice was one such restaurant – they charged an eyewatering €150 for the paste! Still, we decided to go for it – after all, this was an Alain Ducasse’s establishment, wasn’t it? Well, we soon found out what could go wrong. Although the white truffle (so they said) was sourced from Alba (an area famous for growing the fungus) it was, by far, the weakest example of it I’ve ever had. Also, judging from experience, they didn’t even use more than 4g of the stuff. So - that’s €150 down the drain!
QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH 💕 For me, sometimes food isn’t purely about the taste but also the memories evoked by certain flavours and dishes. I experienced a short blast from the past during my dinner here, with comfort food such as vol au vent reminiscent to the (obviously sub-par) ones I had during my 9 years in boarding school + uni. The addition of caviar to my crab on toast and white truffle to my spelt risotto provided a more refined touch to my memories of the UK. Loved the elegantly subtle earl grey sauce that went with the sticky toffee pudding, although the texture was a bit off (I’m somewhat of a STP connoisseur though, so don’t mind me) 😂✨
1️⃣ Crab Mayonnaise & Dill on Beef Dripping Toast ($218, with 15g caviar $598)
2️⃣ Steak Tartare and Seaweed Wafer Potatoes ($208)
3️⃣ White Truffle Risotto ($498) (some spelt grains were added to this but I think I would have preferred a traditional risotto)
4️⃣ Vol au Vent of Braised Beef and Risotto ($388) (strong, bold flavours that went well with the foie gras but beef could be more tender)
5️⃣ Sticky Toffee Pudding, Earl Grey Poached Dates ($98)
6️⃣ Bakewell Tart ($98) (another classic but needed more almond extract)
7️⃣ Mashed Potatoes ($82) (competent but Joel Robuchon’s version always wins, hands down)
